Pictures First, Explanations Second - How Social and Business Communications Work.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

In all social and business communications (teaching, arguing, selling...) pictures come first and explanations (in the form of text, prose, copy or scrolling script) come second. Picures are morre easily grasped and understood, as well as recalled, than are words.

People would rather go to the movie than to read through the book because it frees them from the "burden" of creating constructs (pictures) with their own imaginations. It's easier to remember any part of a movie (generally speaking) than any portion of a book -- with few exceptions.

Visual memory is processed, stored and recalled through a very different process than are words. We ultimately think in pictures, even if these pictures are formed in our own minds after having read or head words.

How many times have you heard someone ask "Do you SEE what I'm SAYING?" This is not an accident -- people believe what they see, and recall what they see, far more easily and accurately than they do groups of words.

When your third grade teacher told you to bring in visual aids when it was your turn to make a presentation regarding some assigned topic in front of the class, she (Ms. Schenendorf, in my case) did it because she intuitively understood that every presentation is made clearer and more memorable by the use of pictures; even if these pictures are collages, montages, word clusters, videos, charts and graphs.

Carrying it one step further, and I always do, words which are coupled with pictures ("A" is for "apple"), or words which are embedded into pictures (whether captioned, or with "thought" or "talk" balloons to illustrate dialogue) are better anchored in the subconscious mind.

It is easier to remember a line from a movie than it is to recite a brief stanza from a poem.

If you've ever had a nightmare, what do you recall first and longest after you've awakened? The dialogue, or the imagery?

I now rest my case. -- DC

---------------
The Future of Cloud Computing Reminds Me Of The Matrix
--especially after the recent failure at Amazon...

In the crucial business and social areas of communications and messaging, pictures (including collages, superimposed photos, illustrations with embedded wisdom) are often far more effective and powerful and conveying ideas, and for stimulating ready recall than plain copy, text or written words.

They are simply processed differently, recorded differently and stored differently in the mind. In fact, most of us think in pictures more than we think in words. When you awaken from a dream, do your memories of a dialogue linger, or do the visual situational aspects tend to stick more firmly in your mind? Think about that example once again...

Use pictures (visual imagery) as much as possible in order to make your message clear and memorable.

Friends, Sociopaths, Liars and THINKING

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Braintainers, Brain-Trainers, TNNWC Members, Entrepreneurs, Leaders, and Followers-In-Waiting-For-A-Chance-To-Take-Charge:

The post title, i.e., "Friends, Sociopaths, Liars and THINKING" probably caught your attention. That's what I'd intended. Three things seem to grab people's attention and recall, both in writing and in the spoken word:

1. Unusual combinations of words;

2. Exaggerated (ad absurdum) metaphors and wild examples;

3. Unexpected, socially-inappropriate comments.

Oh yes, the post....

How is this for a fabulous paradox?:

"Friends. I don't have any. Just ask one."

Ponder that.

Happy Easter,

Douglas Castle

Douglas Castle Humbles Himself And Begs Forgiveness (Which Is Always Easier Than Asking Permission)

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Readers (Entrepreneurs, TNNWC Members, Colleagues, Business Leaders, Innovators, Project Managers, Commanders of Growing Companies, Braintenancers, Global Futurists, Internationalists, Marketers, Trend-Watchers, Trend-Setters, and Friends):

Subject: Douglas Castle Apologies for An Annoying Technical Glitch.

Q: Conspiracy or Catastrophic Compound Error?

It's simple. I am not certain whether it was due to a deadly conspiracy involving a collaborative effort among Twitterfeed, Hellotxt and Ping, or whether it was the result of an extremely unlikely catastrophic compound error (Do I sound paranoid? Are you talkin' to me?), but my status updates have been prodigiously posting themselves to many of my blogs without my knowledge or consent.

Since this began two days ago, I have had a "Blue Ribbon Panel" of "experts" working on solving the problem, and after much debate (mostly over who would be responsible to pay for lunches, and how much of a gratuity we should give the delivery kid), they have assured me that the mechanism has been repaired.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you, and I thank you for your patience and for reading me and my guest contributors.

Great Leaders and Builders Must Think Outside the Box

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

If you aspire to a position of great leadership and responsibility, this requires that you are constantly able to see "outside of the box." You must find unique, ingenious ways of working around impediments, both real and perceived (in your frightened subconscious, with all of its self-limiting beliefs) in order to build your business, your career, or to achieve your most heartfelt goals.  Thinking freely and creatively multiplies your problem-solving abilities.

Great Leaders and Builders Must Think Outside the Box []

NOTE: This article was written by author Douglas Castle, Chairman and CEO of TNNWC Group, LLC a provider of virtually every service needed for growing business enterprises. It was first published in the BRAINTENANCE Blog.

Dear Thought-Leaders, Visionaries, Entrepreneurs, Inventors, Company Captains, Coaches, Consultants and Tour Guides (finding themselves in an unfamiliar part of the rainforest):

One of the tricks to problem-solving is to view roadblocks as "situations" and to contend with them as environmental changes. Just labeling a detour in the road as "a problem" causes your mind to be less creative, more inhibited, and more self-limiting.

There are no problems -- ther are, however, all manner of situations...and situations are always subject to change, either by themselves, or because we intervene to change them.

Be fatalistic about what you may perceive as a problem is all too often a self-fulfilling prophesy. Stop worrying about problems are start adjusting to situations. Not only will this make you into a bettr leader, but it will infuse your team, your followers, your employees and those who depend upon you to be more optimistic and more creative.

The proverbial box is a prison cell or a coffin -- even if your body is there, your mind is free to go where it needs to in order to set you free.

Perception is often the key to creativity and better problem-solving skills.

Lear to see things dispassionately and n-dimensionally. You'll get increasingly skillfull at solving problems and at being a truly resilient Human Being.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Entrepreneurs and Optimism...

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Entrepreneurs and Optimism...

Dear Colleagues, Brainiacs, Leaders, Initiators and Early-Adopters:

"You cannot succeed without a clear vision of your objective or destination firmly in your mind. And you must be endlessly creative in order to find the positive implication, application or gift to be gleaned from every obstacle or failure along the way. A good sense of humor might also help when your attempts at 'seeing the bright side' occasionally falter."

- from the BRAINTENANCE Blog, by Douglas Castle, Chairman and CEO of TNNWC.

To be an entrepreneur, you must be an optimist in your every thought and deed. You must find the silver lining in that swelling cumulus cloud. You must find the glass to be "half full" (which is actually twice as good if it happens to be filled with hemlock). You must run for the roses at full speed, despite the prickly thorns ripping at your Armani trousers and the mud filling your Bruno Magli shoes.
---------------

My friend is an entrepreneur in a start-up company, and he told me just the other day..."Douglas - I'm destined to become filthy rich. And I'm already halfway there!"

After a brief pause for thought, I replied, "I can sense it already!" and walked away nodding to myself.

Despite his poor personal hygiene, his ebullient, positive attitude left us both walking away smiling broadly, albeit for different reasons.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Self-Knowledge for Self-Growth and Business Success

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Cranial Vault Keyholders and Honorary Cardholders:

To be a team leader, a manager, or a coordinator, you must lead by example, and you must be prepared to demonstrate the integrity of your character and the legitimacy of the motivations which precipitate your actions. You are being watched by others. What's more, you are constantly making choices and introspectively (as well as retrospectively) examining your own motives. Others may have to deal with your style of leadership or management, but you have to deal with yourself.

This is going to hurt just a bit, but you might want to think about who you are given these real-life situations:

1) You're the owner of a start-up business venture, and you are pushing the speed limit while driving your hybrid car in the left-hand lane (in the US). You are about to meet a major equity investor. You're running late. The fellow in the car directly in front of you is wavering from lane to lane without signaling, and gently tapping on the brakelights at seemingly random intervals. You scream "You flipping idiot!"

2) Your boss likes to come into the office very early in the morning, and after dinnertime in the evening at random times. He clearly wants to see who is working (by his standard, which involves employees remaining at their desks for many hours), and enjoys this "surprise approach." It is Friday evening, and you have a dinner date with your soul mate -- but you are breking into a sweat at the thought of leaving before 6:30 pm. You may be quite late for your date, who will be waiting at a restaurant where you've made reservations.

3) You are a soldier on the field of battle. An unarmed man, terrified, is kneeling on the ground in front of you with his hands atop his head, on his knees, pleading for his life. You believe that he is a civilian. Your commanding officer stands behind you, puts his gun up to the back of your head, cocks the trigger and says, "Shoot him, private, or I'll shoot you."

4) You have quit smoking after many years. You have not had a cigarette in four months. In your top office desk drawer, you have an unopened pack of cigarettes that you haven't thrown away, and cannot seem to part with...

5) You abhor cheating on examinations. You are in a very competitive class. Most of the other students cheat. They are circulating an unlawfully purloined copy of tomorrow's upcoming exam, obviously without the professor's knowledge. You think to yourself, "I hate cheaters. These people are disgusting. But if I don't get a high grade in this course, I'll lose out on my chance to get into a great graduate school program..."

In each of the above-proposed scenarios, what do you do, and how does that make you feel about yourself? Think hard.

Good Luck.

Crisis Management, Communications and Control

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Crisis Management and Communications.

This article written by Douglas Castle and originally published in Expert Advice And Insights From TNNWC, a publication of TNNWC and The National Networker Companies.

Every leader and team participant who plays an integral role in your company has an obligation to every colleague. If you are in an entrepreneurial enterprise or small business this obligation is all the more critical, in how it is handled and it involves observation, communication, messaging, problem-solving and reporting on the status of any anticipated or actualized crisis. While we'd all prefer to follow a strategic business plan and make incremental, expedient organized progress toward achieving our objectives, crises arise -- it is the nature of business (i.e., problem-solving to achieve an objective) to throw us the occasional crisis or catastrophe. Each one is a test.

If you either recognize or anticipate a crisis that you cannot immediately resolve yourself, you must:

1) Determine all parties within your company who may be affected, and how they may be affected;

2) Immediately notify the parties whose efforts could be a) damaged the most, and b) who are best equipped to handle the crisis so that those parties can make alternative arrangements, or attend to the critical issue. Information and intelligent, reasoned action can contain a small problem and keep it from being catapulted into a catastrophe. If the water is going to be turned off, if your web server is acting up, if the email system isn't going to be working, if payroll is going to tight, if a vendor is no longer qualified to supply your company or if an employee has been terminated, this message must be sent out to everybody affected with efficiency and immediacy;

3) Get the message out directly (yourself, without waiting for a committee meeting, or any other bureaucratic waste of precious time) via email, telephone, or text to all parties who will be affected or may be affected -- it is important, before a crisis ever emerges, that you have established multiple lines of communication to each member of your organization in case of emergency, and that you have a means of signalling that a crisis is in process, or that a crisis is anticipated;

4) Update all affected personnel of what actions are being taken to resolve the critical issue, what they can expect, and an estimated (conservative) timeframe for repair. This is what those folks in Human Resources refer to as "expectation management;"

5) Remember - early, honest notice of a crisis, and updates until it is resolved minimize the organizational and emotional trauma of the crisis, the ancillary damage that might otherwise be caused by a lack of information or by misinformation. A crisis should not be a big secret - it should be competently contained until it can be remedied and business can go back to "work as usual." [ahhh.....]

---------------

The better that you manage a crisis, the less that it will pull you and your team or organization off course. In fact, well-handled crisis management doesn't create the desperation and/or confusion associated with negative surprises or exponentialized rumors -- it is more analogous to improvising lines in a play when you've forgotten part of the script.

How you handle a critical situation will determine if you are meant to lead, or merely menat to attend to the limited scope of your job. Going further, leaders are made because of how they have handled critical situations. For those of you who appreciate silver linings, a crisis represents an opportunity for leaders to develop and to be recognized. Now onward with your mission, captains, commanders and leaders of growing companies, both existing and to be recognized.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Entrepreneurs and Stress: Heart Health Alert!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

The Entrepreneurial Heart: Just right-click on the collage below to see it in higher-definition and a larger size. Isn't amazing that in the most real terms, a dedicated, focused entrepreneur's mind might be the very thing that destroys his or her heart? A tragic irony  requires a delicate balance. Braintenance may help to tip the scales in favor of a longer productive life for these precious persons.

Entrepreneurs and Stress: Heart Health Alert!

Entrepreneurs growing their businesses work incredibly long hours with very limited rest, and with very limited diversions. The rewards of this intense dedication and initiative may lead to business growth and prosperity - But what good are these achievements if you do not live to appreciate them? Physical health is needed to stimulate fiscal growth.

---------------

This Health Alert is brought to you by TNNWC and LINKS 4 LIFE. Please forward or share this information with everyone whom you love and care about.

LINKS 4 LIFE can be found by clicking on http://lifelinksiep.blogspot.com/. Make it a favorite.

ALERT:

There is mounting evidence to support the theory that excessive, uninterrupted and intense working hours may be killing you. In an article excerpt which follows (excerpted from CBS 2 via Yahoo! News), statistics support dramatic increases in the risk of coronary artery disease and heart attacks caused by the increasingly-popular obsessive work habits of owners of small businesses, emerging enterprises and entrepreneurial start-ups.

NYC routine that could shorten lifespan

Many New Yorkers do something that may increase the risk of heart disease by 67 percent. Ways to compensate

---------------
Some ways in which you can protect your heart from your overzealous mind have been suggested in various TNNWC articles and columns, and they include:

1) Take frequent, brief (even as short as 15 minutes) breaks away from your work and communications tools at least every two hours;

2) Spend at least 30 minutes to an hour per day exercising, meditating or engaging in an activity that represents a total diversion from your work;

3) Take breaks to eat lunch and dinner -- and do not wolf down your take-out triple lardburger while sitting at your desk and monitoring your computer and communications devices. Eat slowly;

4) If you are able, get out two to three times daily -- leave your office or home work station environment behind.

5) See your physician or primary health care provider regularly - especially if you develop the slightest symptoms of exhaustion, depression, anxiety, feeling weak or "winded", or experiencing any pain in your jaw, chest, left arm or elsewhere. Your pulse rate, blood pressure and other vital sign indicators must be monitored. Never delay attending to your health because "you're too busy right now."

6) Laugh* as often as possible, and enjoy background music (or music breaks) while you work;

7) Take one day per week off from your entrepreneurial endeavors and devote it to other things (interactions and activities with friends, family, etc.) that satisfy the child inside of you who needs to find distractions, needs to play, needs to daydream and who needs to connect with others. Isolation is physically and emotionally dangerous when taken to extremes.
