entrainment</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"> is any practice that aims to
cause brainwave frequencies to either mimic or to fall into step with
a periodic stimulus having a frequency corresponding to the intended
brain-state (for example, to induce sleep or to induce focus),
usually attempted with the use of specialized light and sound
effects. It depends upon a "frequency following" response
based upon the assumption that the human brain has a tendency to
change its dominant EEG frequency toward the frequency of a dominant
external stimulus. Entrainment is not to be confused with subliminal
programming where thought patterns are subconsciously or
superconsciously receiving actual audio or visual messages to induce
behavioral or mood changes. </span>
</div>

<span style="font-size: small;">For Entrainment, stimulus may be audio, as
in the case of binaural or monaural beats and isochronic tones,
visual, as with the use of a dreamachine (an item of specialized
equipment), a combination of both audio and visual with a mind
machine, or with electromagnetic radiation. We will only be dealing
with audio and visual stimuli for the purposes of our </span><span style="color: navy;"><span lang="zxx"><u><a href="http://braintenance.blogspot.com/"><span style="font-size: small;">Braintenance</span></a></u></span></span><span style="font-size: small;">
regimen.</span></div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Hemispheric synchronization</span>,
a desired result of some forms of brainwave entrainment, refers to a
mind state where the brainwave pattern of the right and left
hemispheres become alike, or synchronized – in harmony together. A
person with similar activity in both hemispheres is prone to be
happier, more optimistic, more emotionally stable and less prone to
mental illness, although this last claim is purely anecdotal without
much hard evidence to support it. Increased levels of synchronization
can be found naturally in people who meditate regularly and in people
who are very content with their lives.<br />
We've selected several brain entrainment videos (with accompanying
audio tracks) to induce different brain states. Remember: Life is an
experiment and the world is your laboratory. In the case of these
entrainment tracks, it is helpful (but not crucial) to have
stereophonic headphones patched into your computer, and to watch the
videos on a full screen setting. These will generally work best on
devices with larger screens. Turn the volume up loudly so as to be
consumed by it, and so that it will block out incidental ambient
noise.
<br />

them is in the early evening after you've finished your day's work
and you can relax and focus, uninterrupted, without time constraints.
Some of these tracks are fairly long so be prepared to sit still and
dedicate some time to each. Do not drive or operate equipment or
machinery soon after enjoying any of these tracks – some of them
will make you feel drowsy or trippy. Try a different track on each
night of the week. If you find one or more to be particularly helpful
or just enjoyable, repeat the experience as often as you would like.<br />

When your brain is absorbed in a problem-solving task which requires a great deal of visualization, imagination and innovation, it is operating on "all of its cylinders." But if you can consciously convince your brain {which behaves like a small child sometimes) that the tasks which it is undertaking are games (the "gamification of problem-solving"), your brain will be even <i>further stimulated</i> as it perceives challenges without consequences for failure. When your game plays games, it is not being nudged by your subconscious mind about past failures or the possibility of additional failures.<br />
<br />
There is a wonderful website which I'd like to share with you in order to assist you in getting your brain to light up with sheer pleasure. My suggestion is to play games from this site (you might wish to bookmark it or make it a favorite) whenever you are faced with an uncooperative, exhausted mind. It just might be the tonic that you need to reboot your brain into production mode.<br />

incredible power, too much conscious focus on attaining a particular
goal or on solving a specific, perplexing problem eventually causes a
sort of “burnout,” where creative methods and solutions become
increasingly elusive as you become increasingly fatigued.

It is at times like these,
when the indirect subconscious approach, i.e., solo brainstorming,
can provide us with a renewed perspective. While most people talk
about brainstorming in groups (“let's toss some ideas around and
see what we come up with...”), in this article we'll find ways of
brainstorming alone using a combination of techniques and approaches.

At its best, brainstorming
is a means of combining the power of the subconscious with the power
of the collective consciousness – where your subconscious (without
your conscious interference) picks up signals from the ever-growing
pool of wisdom on tap in the universe [you may not believe in this
notion of collective consciousness, but there is an increasing body
of evidence, albeit anecdotal, which makes the case and lends credence to its existence].

At its worst, what we refer
to as “brainstorming” simply provides a means of cooling the
consious mind down and allowing it to reboot when it is ready
[assuming, of course, that your subconscious knows how to signal your
conscious mind into renewed wakefulness on demand].</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Here are some steps, simply
outlined, that you can use to get your mind properly attuned to
brainstorming and into the process of brainstorming:</div>

<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
===+ Firstly, relax your
conscious mind and let it drift away. You can accomplish this by
simple meditation (listening to meditative music) or viewing a
hypnotic visual pattern for ten or fifteen minutes. Get your mind
ready to brainstorm. If you need some meditative audio and visual,
YouTube is an excellent source. I sometimes simply use hypnotic
patterns, as they provide some good meditative material. You might
try <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iewSUmShL2g">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iewSUmShL2g</a>
for a ten-minute mind prep for brainstorming. Relax your mind and
body and simply focus on the audio and the visual. Get lost in the
flow of patterns of vision and sound.<br />

approach from the list below, and put it into play (since life is an
experiment and the world is your laboratory, try each of these
techniques at least once and find which works best for you – be an
adventurer):</div>

<u>Technique 1</u>: Take out
a yellow lined pad, and write in five words or less a description of
the problem you are trying to solve or the result which you are
trying to achieve. Then, under each word, taking one word at a time,
write the next word which comes to mind through free association.
You'll wind up with several very long columns of words, and a pile of
ideas as to how to advance your mental task to the next step. It
works.</div>

<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<u>Technique 2</u>: Take the
initial steps outlined in Technique 1, create your sentence, look at
it for one minute, then close your eyes (this works best while you're
sitting in a comfortable chair), and let your mind form pictures
using either the brief sentence, a word from the sentence, or a few
letters from a single word or words. Ideas will emerge from your
internal narration of each of the pictures. Your creativity will be
running wild, and that's precisely what you want.</div>

<u>Technique 3</u>: Take out
a dictionary, start with any letter you'd like, and read each word
once aloud, and follow it with a single simple thought about how that
word directly or remotely relates (it doesn't matter how remote the
association is) to the problem that you are trying to solve or the
objective that you're trying to achieve. After a brief while, new
ideas will pop into your head, framed in a new perspective.</div>

Each of the above techniques
is associative, distracting, invites daydreaming and does not permit
you to address the probem or goal in a conventional, linear approach.
The above three “out of the box” brainstorming approaches will
help you to be far more creative than you would otherwise be if you
just kept thinking and efforting head-on.</div>

<a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorization" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Memorization">Memorizing</a> and being able to repeat certain types of sentences does more than build up your facility for rote memorization. The improvement in simple recall is actually the least of it! Memorizing the sentences which follow will strengthen your ability to visualize, organize and to think creatively. Memorize each of the seven sentences (or groups of sentences) which follow, one at a time. Then recite each one aloud several times. Get smarter, make more associative connections and have a bit of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroplasticity" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Neuroplasticity">neural plasticity</a> on the house! Ahoy, <a href="http://braintenance.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Braintenancers</a>:<br />

1) Let me repeat your order. You bought twenty apples, thirty oranges and fifteen bananas which you paid for using your Discover Card.<br />
<br />
2) The parties agree that due to the many variables surrounding each business transaction that will occur because of this agreement, the commission to be paid between the parties may vary.<br />
<br />
3) Contrarians don't generally agree with veterinarians who refuse to treat planarians with microscopic plantar warts.<br />
<br />

One of the keys to eliminating anxiety, depression and distraction is the meditative exercise of living in the moment. Doing this requires that you focus intently on all of the myriad sensations which you are experiencing in a single moment of conscious living.<br />
<br />
This is a challenge for most individuals, who are more accustomed to ruminating over the past or anticipating the future. Even the most intelligent persons (and certainly all followers and dedicated practitioners of<a href="http://braintenance.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> Braintenance</a>) are preoccupied with thoughts which are "out of sync" with the living, full-sensory experience of the present moment.<br />
<br />
While the meditative exercise of present-moment living will not, <i>per se</i>, increase your mental magnitude and specific sets of thinking and problem-solving brain skills, it will indirectly benefit your thought processing mechanisms by allowing your overly-conscious mind to take a brief vacation from excessive cerebration. The mind, as any other muscle, needs its rest.<br />
<br />
Try to take just five to ten minutes daily to focus intently upon every feeling of your mind and body while conducting a simple rote task. Focus consciously upon the sight, smell, visual picture, physical feeling and other basic but ever-present (and too often ignored) "feelings" of your experience in that present moment. With true present-moment focus and practice, you will find that the constant background noise of your out-of-sync<i><b>,</b></i> past-related and future-anticipated thinking will dissipate.<br />
<br />
Fans of Braintenance -- this daily meditation is absolutely worth the effort, as it can help to prevent mental fatigue and burnout, while eliminating negative stress. Now (he said paradoxically), stop thinking about doing it and just do it!<br />

The following fabulous memory hacks (I'm using the term "hacks" in the non-pejorative sense of the term)
were recently described in an article by Bruce Price in the Blog
“Mental_Floss” which I happened to stumble upon while casually
surfing about the labyrinth of, well, StumbleUpon. While the original
article listed “10 Mnemonic Tricks,” I found the first 7 of them
to be worth sharing; the other three (probably added in the interest
of making an even 10), where either impractical or (pun intended)
unmemorable.</div>

Use these as part of your memorization
mastery regimen for better Braintenance, my dear Cranial Campers. But
be advised that they are not substitutes for true native memory
development – they are merely shortcuts where our underdeveloped
memories would otherwise fail us. Those few of us blessed with
eidetic or photographic memories may simply skim over this article
rapidly.</div>
<h4 class="western">
1. The rhyme.</h4>
For hundreds of years, schoolchildren started the study of
American history with: "In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue."<br />
<h4 class="western">
2. The verbal gimmick.</h4>
Clearly, modern civilization would be impossible without these
four words: "Spring forward. Fall back."<br />
<h4 class="western">
3. The poem.</h4>
Probably a million people every day resort to this famous
six-liner:<br />
<blockquote>
Thirty days hath September,<br />
April, June, and
November;<br />
All the rest have thirty-one<br />
Excepting February
alone:<br />
Which hath but twenty-eight, we find,<br />
Till leap year
gives it twenty-nine.</blockquote>

4. The easy association.</h4>
Many people have trouble with these similar words
—<i>desert</i>, <i>dessert</i> — until they
remember that when it comes to tasty treats like cake and ice cream,
you always want an extra helping — just as the word itself has an
extra s.<br />
<h4 class="western">
5. The contrived association.</h4>
The essential trick is to focus on something odd or funny, and use
that to jog your memory. All the memory experts are doing this when
they rattle off the names of many people: Bob is big and bald;
Charlie has a chin as big as China. And so on.<br />
<br />
These two words are killers: <i>stalactite</i>, <i>stalagmite</i>.
But <i>stalag </i>means prison; and <i>mite</i> suggests
mighty. Clearly, a fortress solidly on the ground. So the other thing
has to be hanging from the ceiling. <br />
<h4 class="western">
6. The acronym.</h4>
Suppose you have to buy three things: nails, plywood, and
antifreeze. Use the initial letter of each item to create a word:
PAN. Remember that. In the store, work in reverse, P-A-N, the letters
reminding you what you have to buy.<br />
<br />
HOMES is a famous example. It tells us our Great Lakes: Huron,
Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.<br />
<br />
Almost as famous is Roy G. Biv, a phony name which tells the
colors of the rainbow or spectrum (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green,
Blue, Indigo, Violet).<br />
<h4 class="western">
7. Cross words.</h4>
Acrostics are another thing entirely. You don't create a new word,
you create a memorable phrase or sentence. The first letter of each
word stands for the things you're trying to remember. In smart
schools, middle-schoolers are given the task of inventing mnemonics
for the 8 planets: My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us
Nachos (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus.
Neptune).<br />
<br />
The eight little bones in the wrist are a big task for anyone:
Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetral, Pisiform, Trapezium, Trapezoid,
Capitate, Hamate. The job is easier, or at least funnier, with this:
Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can't Handle.<br />
<br />
Med school is next to impossible without mnemonics. One of the
most famous reveals the names of the nerves that come directly
through the skull (not the spinal column): On Old Olympus' Towering
Top, A Finn And German Vaulted And Hopped. (Olfactory, Optic,
Oculomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Auditory,
Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory/Spinal, Hypoglossal.)<br />
