Solve ANY Math Problem! - Braintenance

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

You can solve any math problem if you know the formula (i.e., the proven shortcut to arriving at the answer without the need for giant chain calculations).

These formulas are like keys to unlocking the secrets of arithmetic and mathematical puzzles and riddles.

The tougher issues are those of knowing how to conduct a search (knowing the right search engine parameters to enter (hint: a Google search might be a good idea for your first pass at "asking a question" without asking a question) and finding the right formula to apply.

This process sharpens your mind in that it requires that you 1) identify the problem; 2) formulate a question; 3) construct an efficient search engine query; and 4) glance through at least a small number of sites or articles about the issue which you want to address.

Every one of these steps ratchets up a whole menu of cognitive skills to a higher level.

Solving the problem is merely the proverbial icing atop the cake [an inexcusably cheap metaphor, but it was better than "the last nugget squeezed atop the mountain," which I was told not to use as it might prove unsavory to my readers of delicate constitution and discerning taste.

Here are several quick problems which you can solve by merely asking using the problem/ question/ search query/ cursory reading approach described above:

A) What is the sum of the whole numbers from 1 to 5,000, inclusive?

B) What is the product of all of the whole numbers from 1 to 25, inclusive? {This number is often expressed as 25! or '25 factorial'}

C) What is the number (a constant) to ten decimal places obtained by dividing any circle by its diameter?

D)  How many Angstrom Units are there in twelve inches (one foot)?

E)  How many possible combinations of 3 partner groups can be created out of a total classroom of 30 students?

Make me proud! Wrinkle those brains! Expand those minds! Sharpen those skills!

Keeping Those New Year's Resolutions?

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

We've had more than enough time to start re-evaluating those New Year's Resolutions. This might be a good time to determine which to keep, which to toss, and how to stay on course with the ones which are truly self-motivated and rooted in our own desires for self-improvement and greater happiness.

The article excerpt which follows appears courtesy of BigThink's Daily IdeaFeed, a wonderful source of information on virtually everything of interest to intelligent, thoughtful persons. There...I've just paid you a subtle, subliminal compliment! Read on, then click the "BACK" button on your browser and come back home to your new country... Cerebrainia*

WILLPOWER
Why You Won't Keep Your New Year's Resolutions
By the end of January, a third of everyone who has made a New Year's resolution
will have stopped.
By July, more than half will lapse. But knowing why could keep you on the right track.
READ NOW

---------------

Without going into a ridiculous wealth of detail and burdening you with the obvious, some of the principal reasons that we fail to "live up" to our New Year's resolutions are summarily listed here:

1) We psychologically frame them on "deprivation," "anticipated unpleasantness," "excessive efforting." Naturally, our subsconscious programs us for failure from the very negative beginnings of these thoughts;

2) We do not engage in any serious, repetitive positive visualization of the wonderful results we seek -- we just bemoan the effort and picture the sacrifices required to get there;

3) We are unrealistic in the goals we set, and the time frames involved in achieving them -- or worse, we don't set clear incremental goals and definitive time frames within which to achieve them;

4) We make "all or nothing at all" resolutions which set us up for immediate disappointment, discouragement, and abandonment of the effort altogether;

5) We make resolutions to please others, as opposed to making resolutions where we personally will derive a direct benefit. These "third-party focused" resolutions are entered into with more than a hint of resentment, dooming us to failure.

There will be more about this later. In fact, I'll help you to keep those New Year's resolutions (at least the ones which are founded in a legitimate, reasonable self-improvement objective) through sharing a series of relaxing and surprisingly effective subliminal self-programming tapes with you. These tapes which employ binaural beats and positively framed generic suggestions, can be listened to through your binaural headphones or directly through your speakers -- either way, you'll find them soothing and beneficial. Please stay tuned, my fellow (and lady) Brainistas!*

Don't touch that remote!

Math Puzzle - The Missing Sign: PART 2

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Our challenge of several days ago was to use intellectual "brute force" (very rapid, iterative trial-and-error) to find out which arithmetic operations were being performed on the numbers in the equations which follow. Instead of using the common symbols, I had substituted the letter "n" for any operation. Let's crack the code, Oh Braintenancers.

Find the missing signs which are all represented below as the letter "n" in the following simple equations. I'll have answers for you within the next two days. You have plenty of time. Put away the crossword and Sudoku, and give this exercise a whack. Have at it, then. Answers are posted in red.

A) 9 n 3 n 3 = 30  The first n is multiplication, and the second n is addition.

B) 7 n 5 n 3 = 9  The first n is addition, and the second n is subtraction.

C) 12 n 3 n 1 = 5  The first n is division , and the second is addition.

Have fun. By the way, are you doing mathematics, arithmetic or something else. It might be time to take a run at Google or Wikipedia...

Oxymorons Abound. IQs: Running On Empty*.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Oxymorons have engulfed civilization like a moth-bitten shroud. I had dinner with a friend several nights ago, and he asked "What the h*ll (he actually used "f**k!" but I don't have the audacity to put that in writing) is a 'Jobless Recovery' ?." As a trained economist (paper-trained at very least), I was being asked a real question -- not a rhetorical one. I replied, "It's political 'nonspeak' (an invented word or Lingovation) for a 'continued recession."

The question which we are always asking ourselves: "Is that an oxymoron, or is it just me?"

Think Outside Of Your Own Head - Command And Control Your Mind.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Thinking is a wonderful exercise, if you are the master of your mind, and you are willing to proactively focus it in a productive direction...If you think in obsessive and expanding cycles, or dwell on things, what you are doing instead is allowing your mind to run you -- and it will indeed run you into self-doubt, anxiety, depression and a loss of perspective.

Be the Commander of your Mind.

Here are some seemingly irrelevant things to ponder in order to give your mind a good workout...if these distract you from your customary self-pity and introspection, if these derail the train of your soul's own undoing, then I've done you a favor. Actually, since you've made the choice to go forward and ponder these ponderables, you've done yourself a favor.

Always be aware of your thinking -- try, although it might seem difficult, to detach yourself from your thinking process, and become an observer...sort of "walking around and watching" yourself. Try it. Think constructively. "Think outside of your own head,"as a brilliant friend of mine once said many years ago. Control and own your thoughts from the outside in. Sounds confusing? Good.

Ponderables:

1) When you say that you don't "smell," good, which side of the nose are you on? It could be either. In one case you are malodorous; in the other, you may be suffering from sinus congestion, allergies, or a breakdown of the olfactory apparatus, rendering you unable to appreciate the redulance of a rose [ahem].

2) Can a person consistently be inconsistent?

3) Can a pathological liar actually be telling you the truth when he "confesses" to you that he always lies?

Fun with etymology (a bonus):

What are the origins of the expression "Shut your pie hole?"

That should hold you for a bit.

Thoughtfully,

Douglas Castle

MORONYMS - A New Lingovation - Douglas Castle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

MORONYMS - A New Lingovation - Douglas Castle

A Pre-Thanksgiving post originally published simultaneously (well, almost) on the BRAINTENANCE BLOG and on The TNNWC RSS Feed and Daily Email Supplement Blog.

Dear Cranial Crunchers:

If you've never heard the term "Lingovation," (because you have been held captive in an underground interrogation facility in Samoa, for example), you may want to Google the term. If you are involved in a dispute with Google, and don't want to give them your business (as if they'd really miss you), a handy definition follows below:

"As you may or may not know, a Lingovation is a newly-created, freshly-coined word, often comprised of a hybrid or contraction of several existing words, which comes into being when no other single existing word or word combination (and sometimes not even an entire paragraph!) can precisely express the thought. They are not nonsensical terms, and must indeed be taken very seriously." - Douglas Castle

Lingovations are regularly featured in TNNWC Group's The BLUE TUESDAY Report. At the time of this writing, the latest featured Lingovation in the Report can be found by going to Technullity.  If you wish to see "Technullity" in all of its splendor you can visit it by clicking on either Google Technullity or Yahoo Technullity. Note:Subscribe to The BLUE MONDAY Report (it's free) and get fresh and hysterical Lingovations weekly -- http://bit.ly/JoinTNNWC .

Today, a Lingovation has been born of necessity (and due to my need to take a rest from getting prepared (i.e., picking out a suit of armor and a musket) for the Thanksgiving holiday.

You have heard of antonyms, homonyms and synonyms -- we've spoken of them before. I propose something far more special...MORONYMS. The term is a combination of the root words Moron and "-nyms," the latter being a suffix meaning "words" or "names". MORONYM (singular) and MORONYMS (plural) are the utterings of the ill-informed or verbally accident-prone. The accent is on the first syllable - mor' .

Within this class are some malaprops, spoonerisms (it's enough to give you fart hailure!), words with extra syllables in the middle (preventatative medicine, and becoming "orientated" to the new surroundings), horrific mispronounciations and other ridiculous things which people say by accident or because they have done more reading than listening. Here are some more examples:

"I have to have this witnessed before a Notary Republic."

"She lives in a very lucrative neighboorhood."

"I love the way you talk. You are so verbose!"

"Nuclear" pronounced as "New-cu-lar."

" I seen him millions of times." (a bit of hyperbole thrown in, too)

"Sorry. My Bad." (an ebonically-derived expressed adopted by "The Man"). Try saying this in a corporate board meeting.

"If you try it, well then it's ON YOU!" Note: This is only appropriate when discussing things like super-carbonated beverages, moving vats of liquids, and the like...and even then, its grammatically incorrect.

"Your car engine is caddywumpussed up. I'll take two days to repair it."

"What in tarnation do you think that you're doing?"

"We now have twelve board of directors!" (translated: "We now have twelve Directors on our Board").
---------------

See you all soon (a virtual possibility).

In the meantime, enjoy the Holiday. As I've said before (at the commencement address of my graduating class at Hummus State College Of Fraternal Medicine)..."Gentlemen. Ladies. At Thanksgiving time, always remember who's stuffing whom." - Amen

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
