Time: Better Perspective?/ Greater Distortion?

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

BRAINTENANCE borrows from the TAKING COMMAND! Blog...

Dear Braintenanciers [which is how they should be spelling and pronouncing it en Francais]: It appears that we have opposing views regarding the effects of the passage of time during the course of one's life. On the one hand, many believe that the passage of time gives one a clearer perspective; on the other, many believe that the passage of time creates distortions.

What do you think?

The answer, I believe, is a combination of both. Neither view is false, but neither view is complete of itself.

Regarding the first view, with the passage of time comes the acquisition of experience and knowledge, and a broader data base upon which to construct comparisons, qualitatively and quantitatively. As this base increases with time, our ability to measure, to understand, to see against a greater backdrop of different and similar experiences heightens.

This is a gift of perspective. A person who has lived only five years has a much smaller base from which to draw a more precise perspective than the same person an additional five years hence. A first experience of the intoxicating and totally absorbing rush of youthful first love (perhaps "infatuation" would be a better term), is very different after one has experienced loving interaction in several relationships over a course of time. Love may be love, but it feels different given our wealth of love's history, if we are fortunate.

Regarding the second view, time does allow us, with failings of mental capacity, defensive reconstruction of personal history, protective patches of selective amnesia, the compounding of emotional weight (much like interest accumulating on invested principal), the inadvertent interweaving of dreams with experiences and upon certain particularly positive or negative recollections [where we build epics, legends and romantic tragedies in our imaginations, reconstructions and re-thinkings] to develop great distortions in our recall of many things.

The most interesting thing is that these two effects do not offset or counterbalance each other -- they co-exist within the same mind. A person can actually experience distorted childhood memories and yet have a clear situational perspective at the exact same time.

Think about this. Go back to a book, or poem or picture that effected you profoundly some time ago. Does it elicit the same sentiment now?

Your mind is a conflictory bundle of abilities and levels or types of consciousness. Why do you think that NLP, hypnotherapy, EMDR, EFT and cognitive therapy can effect us? It is because of the amazing compartmentalization of the Human Mind.

And as if things were not sufficiently complicated, sometimes these compartments work cooperatively and synergistically, and in other cases, they are either completely unaware of each other, or they actually work at crossed purposes in direct contradiction or conflict.

The mind is the most mysterious muscle of the collection that comprises us.

Keep exploring and experimenting -- (I'm grinning), both within your mind and without your mind. The sentence seems to make sense [structurally], but you can never do anything without your mind. More comforting perhaps, is that no matter how far you wander, you can never literally be out of your mind.

I'm somewhat relieved.

IQ: What Is Your "Practical Intelligence Quotient"?

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

This delightful Braintenance offering is brought to you through the good offices (I haven't actually visited them, so I'm merely being polite) of Dr. Daniel Benor. Every project manager, management consultant, engineer, CEO, COO, attorney, physician, leader and entrepreneur should take this test. The paradox here is that very intelligent individuals have a natural tendency to be impatient, and to "jump the gun" to arrive at answers. In this particular test, the performance advantage is on the side of the more studious and methodical among us.

Fact: The most obvious things tend to elude even the most clever minds.

The best aspect of this test is not what it measures -- it is that in taking the test, itself, you will receive a valuable lesson in how your mind works. Think of the educational efficiency of this device: You actually learn by the act of taking a test. Elegant, eh?

It presents a wonderful opportunity to test your Practical Intelligence Quotient in the form of several quick questions. Read the instructions carefully before you begin.

Hint: Do not assume anything. Utilize all of the facts presented to answer the questions, one after the next. Your growing (cumulative) knowledge base will help you to answer each question in the sequence correctly. When you've finished, you will likely want to forward this article to several friends and colleagues, as well as some of your family members, if you are actually on speaking terms with them.

----------------

There are 4 simple questions. Don't miss one.

1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

Stop and think about it and decide on your answer before you scroll down.

The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe, and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

2 How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Did you say, Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant, and close the refrigerator?

Wrong Answer.

Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous actions..

3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals
attend .... Except one. Which animal does not attend?
Correct Answer : The Elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. You just put him in there. This tests your memory. Okay, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities.

4. There is a river you must cross but it is used by crocodiles, and
you do not have a boat. How do you manage it?

Correct Answer:? You jump into the river and swim across. Have you not been listening? All the crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

---------------
According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, approximately 90% of the Professionals whom they tested got all of the questions wrong, but many of the preschoolers who were given the same test arrived at several correct answers.

Anderson Consulting Worldwide says this conclusively proves the theory that "most professionals do not have the brains of a four-year-old."

------------

TNNWC believes that the above conclusion is a bit ridiculous, overly generalized and poorly-worded (I personally detest the part about the "brains of a four-year-old": because A) someone is apparently confusing the plural with the singular and the notion of intelligence with brains; and B) depending upon your interpretation of the Anderson conclusion, this does not preclude the lugubrious possibility that these tested professionals do not have, either in their offices or their homes, the actual brains of four-year-olds preserved in mason jars [ecch!].

But the one useful conclusion derived from this exercise upon which our TNNWC Experts and Advisors would agree would be that presumptions can be hazardous in effective decision making.

Did I hear someone say "Amen?"

Faithfully,
Douglas E Castle

Perspective: One Person's Catastrophe Is Another's Opportunity - BRAINTENANCE

Perspective: One Person's Catastrophe Is Another's Opportunity - BRAINTENANCE

Dear Readers and Member's of Aunt Rose's Mah Jongg (sp?) Group in North Palm Beach, Florida:

As soon as the Internet became a medium for mass communication in regular use, over-aggressive marketers began sending spam to email addresses, social media sites, networking groups, blogs and everywhere they might be able to get their unauthorized and generally unwelcome messages to groups of people.

After a brief period of time, robots (automation programs for repetitive processes) came into use for the purpose of accelerating and broadening the spread of spam ("spam on steroids!").

In order to thward these literary litterers, the CAPTCHA code program was devised by some very good "white hat" programmers out of Princeton University (then again, it might have been Phoenix University, DeVry, Katherine Gibbs, or Ball State, but I don't think so -- I should use spelllcheck and a fact-checker, but I'm a) too cocky and b) too cheap) developed the CAPTCHA process to keep robots from spamming us.

The idea was to use a string of machine-distorted letters and numbers (which could theoretically be read only by Humans, and perhaps well-trained weasels) which had to be interpreted and reproduced in order to access a website or application. The idea was, in principle, a great one -- keep the robots out, and only let hard-working Human Beings (and the occasionally trained weasel) to gain access to sight if it could prove that it was not a robot by passing the CAPTCHA test code at the portal of entry.

This created a disaster for many of the marketers who had been become utterly dependent upon robots to spread their solicitations and other messages (categorically, "spam"). These people were being put out of business.

But the cries of spam-marketers were heard by some "black hat" geeks who saw that a new market (i.e., businesses that were dependent upon spam for their proliferation and profits) had opened up to them. These entrepreneurs have since created numerous programs to bypass and otherwise thwart the CAPTCHA code.

In fact if you google the term CAPTCHA you'll find some great information. If you then google the terms CAPTCHA code bypass you'll find a host of means of bypassing the CAPTCHA qualifier.

Given some time, there will be another generation of CAPTCHA-purposed programs which will defeat these CAPTCHA code bypass tools.

The pendulum swings, creating catastrophes and new markets with every stroke.

Solve a problem, and you've addressed the needs of a market.

Create a problem, and you've opened up another, new market.

Catastrophe and Opportunity are opposite sides of the same coin.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
