Analogies: Every Thought...Every Communication.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

We Humans (and all sentient creatures, In-Laws included) depend upon the recognition and creation of analogies for virtually every aspect of our thinking, understanding [learning], and communications. They are the smallest common denominator of 'cause and effect' logic and sending meaningful messages to others. The only smaller Messaging Unit or Thought Particle (both quasi-Lingovations) is the singular emotionally-charged word which triggers powerful multisensorial memories with seemingly instant associations.

An carefully-chosen analogy (i.e., one which clearly makes the point and which is appropriate to the probable prior experience - or context - of your audience) is one of the most efficient teaching tools.

Most "Aha!" moments and "NOW I get it!" exclamations follow analogies which hit the spot.

In building your brain power, you will undoubtedly want to include analogy quizzes in your Braintenance exercise regimen.

In fact, I might just offer you several analogy puzzlers with my next post.

Oxymorons Abound. IQs: Running On Empty*.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Oxymorons have engulfed civilization like a moth-bitten shroud. I had dinner with a friend several nights ago, and he asked "What the h*ll (he actually used "f**k!" but I don't have the audacity to put that in writing) is a 'Jobless Recovery' ?." As a trained economist (paper-trained at very least), I was being asked a real question -- not a rhetorical one. I replied, "It's political 'nonspeak' (an invented word or Lingovation) for a 'continued recession."

The question which we are always asking ourselves: "Is that an oxymoron, or is it just me?"

*Technically speaking, you cannot actually "run on empty." The person who can run on empty can easily exceed his maximum, as well. Could he also be [from a Nationwide Ad on TV] "The World's Greatest Salesperson In The World?"

Make Yourself Understood

MAKE YOURSELF UNDERSTOOD.

"It is important that you word your questions with great precision and without presumption." - Douglas Castle   http://aboutDouglasCastle.blogspot.com
---------------

Dear Friends:

Comedian Steven Wright tells a story about walking around his neighborhood wearing socks of two different colors. When a woman asks him, "Do you know that your socks don't match?" he replies, "Sure they do. I don't go by color-- I go by thickness."

Last evening, my wife asked me, "What's the difference between loquacious and garrulous?" I quickly replied, "The spelling."

Of course she had intended to ask, "What is the difference in meaning between loquacious and garrulous?"

The lesson is a simple but important one: The quality and usefulness that you will get in response to a question will be influenced by the way in which you word the question. Imprecisely worded questions lead to misinterpretations, and misinterpretations lead to inefficient and unproductive conversation.

Worded slightly differently: If you ask questions with a high degree of specificity, you greatly increase the probability of your getting answers that are meaningful. You may discuss the implications of this this with any attorney who has gone through the exercise of examining a person on the witness stand.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
