Analogies Are Mind Expanders: Braintenance - Douglas E. Castle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Analogies Are Mind Expanders

If you'd like to truly sharpen your ability to think associatively and to open up some exciting neural pathways in the bargain, doing exercises involving analogies may be just the think to add to your Braintenance regimen. These exercises even improve you pattern recognition, total cognition and creative thinking. If you'd like to think outside of the box (and keep your mind fresh in the process), analogies are wonderful tools.

An analogy (dog is to puppy as cat is to kitten, or, as it commonly appears on standardized tests, especially in higher grades: dog : puppy :: cat : kitten) is a comparison between two things that are usually thought to be different from each other, but have some similarities. They help us understand things by making connections and seeing relationships between them based on knowledge we already possess.

Analogies are a ubiquitous staple of standardized tests. This type of comparison plays a significant role not only in improving problem solving and decision making skills, but also in perception and memory, as well as communication and reasoning skills. Learning analogies can help with reading and building vocabulary.

Types of Analogies include:
  • Synonym (happy : joyful :: sad : depressed)
  • Antonym (inflation : deflation :: frail : strong)
  • Characteristic (tropical : hot :: polar : cold)
  • Part/Whole (finger : hand :: petal : flower)
  • Degree (mist : fog :: drizzle : tropical storm)
  • Type (golden retriever : dog :: salmon : fish)
  • Tool/Worker (pen : writer :: voice : singer)
  • Action/Object (fly : airplane :: drive : car)
  • Item/Purpose (knife : cut :: ruler : measure)
  • Product/Worker (poet : poem :: baker : pie)
    Different types of analogies are introduced at different levels. Elementary school analogies may be simple, possibly funny analogies; whereas middle school analogies may focus more on analogical reasoning. Analogies practiced in high school delve even more deeply into analogical problem solving.
    Analogy vs. Metaphor
    Students often confuse analogies with metaphors. Both are comparisons, often involving unrelated objects, so what IS the difference? An analogy is a parallel comparison between two different things, whereas a metaphor is more of a direct comparison between two things, often with one word being used to symbolically represent another. "All the world's a stage. And all the men and women merely players." is an example of a famous metaphor. William Shakespeare is directly comparing the world to a stage, with the people playing " roles" as they go about their daily lives. A comparable analogy would be "Players are to stage as figure skaters are to ice rink."
Practice
Here are some examples (without answers supplied, so if you are overly-challenged, you'll need to employ dictionary.com or some other vocabulary resource) of analogies to sharpen your mind and refresh your vocabulary as well...

TWO TYPES OF LEARNING AND ANALYSIS

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

There are two different types of analysis and learning relating to our ability to see and recognize patterns and relationships. One method is extrapolative, which means finding the next item in a sequence of items. The second method is interpolative, which means finding the missing item somewhere in the middle of a sequence of items.

We are expressing ourselves interpolatively when we average items -- for example when you are told that an item will cost between $10.00 and $20.00, your mind averages the two together and you think of a "middle" or simple mean average price of $15.00. This is how most people think without realizing that they are doing it. In fact, if you were told that the price would be on the higher side, you would probably interpolate the anticipated price as $17.50 -- we do this by first finding the mean, and then by finding a second mean (or 'derivative mean') between the first mean and the maximum. Our mind dices and slices when we are asked to estimate "between" two things.

When we must find the last item in a sequence of items, we must recognize a pattern and then apply extrapolative thinking. An Example of each type follows, for a quick brain exercise:

1) We are on a 100 mile trip, and have gone three quarters of the way. How many miles do we have left? How many miles have we already traveled? In we are going to make a rest stop halfway between where we are and our final destination, how many more miles must we go before we can rest?

2) What is the next item in the series? ABD, BCE, CDF.... ___ .

Enjoy the TED Video (Goals Versus Behaviors) which follows!

Pattern Recognition Versus Memorization: Braintenance

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Two essential components of intelligence are the ability to recognize (and extrapolate) patterns, and the ability to simply memorize strings of randomized data. Each requires the use of different parts of the brain. Alternating between one and the other creates an increase in both abilities plus increases neuronal plasticity and problem-solving ability.

For each of the following strings of data, do the following:

1) Recite all of the data points from memory after looking at the data for no longer than two minutes;
2) Recite all of the data points backwards from memory after looking at the data for another minute;
3) If you recognize a pattern, find the next data point.

NOTE: Do not look back to previous strings in working on this exercise!
---------------

STRING A: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 ...

STRING B: 1, 3, 2, 4, 3, 5, 4, 6, 5, 7 ...

STRING C: 3, 7, 5, 8, 3, 9, 6, 11, 2 ...

STRING D: Apple, Bicycle, Carnival, Donut, Energy, Footprint ...

STRING E: Carbon, Log, Melon, River, Wheel, Toe ...

STRING F: Apple, Log, Carnival, River, Donut, Wheel, Energy ...

STRING G: Apple, 2, Bicycle, 4, Carnival, 6, Donut ...

Now that you've done this exercise, relax for a minute or so, and enjoy the embedded video below:

Increase Memory, Recall And Cognition: MAZES!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Did you know that navigating your way through mazes can increase your total memory, recall and cognition? Did you know that this simple recreational activity (which only requires a pencil and a mind) also delays the outset of senile dementia, enhances your ability to focus, improves your abstract reasoning, improves your ability to plan and carries with it untold and countless other benefits.

Mazes are wonderful mental muscle builders.

Individuals tend to attack mazes (on paper or on sketch screen applications on mobile devices) using any one of several approaches:

1) Brute Force Adherents, who only make a cursory inspection of the maze, followed by high-speed trial and error attempts, with each attempt usually getting than the one which preceded it and terminated at an earlier stopping point;

2) Center - Out Examiners, who view the whole maze and first seek to identify the center, and psychologically work their way outward to the entryway of the maze befor putting stylus to screen or pencil to paper;

3) Alternating Center-Out, Outside-Center Examiners who switch back and forth between finding a path from the center out, and from the entrance to the center prior to tackling the maze with any commitment.

As you might have guessed intuitively, the third group tends to be the most successful in terms of time to master the maze, while the first group (unless they have done a great number of mazes and have developed an instinct for the maze maker's structures and tricks - to the extent that there is some element of pattern recognition) tends to fair the slowest.

The third group is using multi-dimensionally referenced intelligence (actually making connections from several different perspectives and putting them together), while the first group is working very much like a computer... except that the computer can do the same brute force trial and error process much faster.

In working a maze, try to work (even if it requires a change of habit) like the constituents of the third group to the greatest extent reasonably possible. In fact, one of the best tricks is to hold the maze as far away from your face as possible, and then bring it closer a bit at a time; then reverse the process. This adds yet an additional perspective to give you both the microscopic and telescopic dimensions of the maze.

For your entertainment, I've put together a short list of maze generators. You can use these to generate mazes, print them out (if you must kill a tree -- sigh --), and do them at your leisure. One thing is certain; the more of these that you do, the better you get at doing them quickly. Some of this is attributable to pattern recognition, and some of it is due to better integrating all of the perspectives in all of the dimensions.

The list of maze generators follows:

Analogies - The Smallest Thought Units

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Analogies are the tiniest components of thoughts and communications. Constructing good analogies is a skill. Seeing the logic in partial analogies presented to you (i.e., where a term is missing) builds your associative intelligence, pattern recognition skills, cause and effect reasoning and your verbal acuity. Analogies are mental muscle builders.

Here are several simple ones to give you a small jolt of electromagnetic and biochemical stimulation today. Enjoy them!

Fill in each blank with the best possible answer.

1. Century is to __________ as dollar is to dime.

2. __________ is to bottom as up is to down.

3.Hawk is to _____________ as war is to peace.

4. Cat is to kitten as lion is to ______________.

5. Tree is to forest as star is to _____________.

6. _____________ is to stage as chemist is to laboratory.

7. Inventor is to Edison as _________________ is to Columbus.

8. China is to __________ as Canada is to North America.

9. __________ is to moon as day is to night.

10. Hand is to palm as foot is to ___________.

11. Pyramid is to square as cone is to ___________.

12. Bazaar is to bizarre as __________ is to kernel.

13. Star is to constellation as _________ is to sentence.

14. Complete is to __________ as rest is to relax.

15. Chapter is to novel as stanza is to ____________.

16. Water is to _________ as food is to eat.

17. Body is to skin as _________ is to bark.

18. Hero is to ______________ as sculptor is to sculptress.

19. Fast is to slow as fat is to __________.

20. Hat is head as _________ is to foot.

I'm not going to provide answers for you in a subsequent post. You might want to engage some of your friends and colleagues to review or to actually do some of these with you. If may just give you an excuse to socialize and get into discussions about deeper and more important issues.

Texticles: Mythological God Of Texting

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

It's wonderful to be creative with language. While I have never actually heard of a resident (in good standing) named Texticles (pronounced: text'-e- kleez) living atop the famed Mt. Olympus (in the same neighborhood as Zeus and the rest of those characters of legend), it would seem to make sense. This is not actually a Lingovation -- it is a comedic mockery of the structure and sound of language. It brings to mind Hercules, Damocles, Demosthenes, but it sounds a tad racy. I don't have to say it - it is funnier when left to the imagination

Speaking of these sound-alikes, I almost fell out of my seat in school when our Philosophy professor mentioned 'Balzac'. It sounded rather similar to something else. This word mimicry ("sound-alikes" seems so juvenile) is a sort of patterning behavior, usually involving the number of syllables and a certain cadence.

If I could do it with a straight face, and if I delivered the message rapidly enough, I could introduce my daughters by ridiculously inappropriate names (remember Tony Orlando's song, "Candida"?). I would say something like, "This is my sixth-grader, a future Olympic gymnast, Chlamydia, and my beautiful twins - Alopecia and Disthymia. Alopecia has to leave to practice her viola now, and I think (eying the other young lady, mischievously) her sister has some homework to do. C'mom, Dee-Dee. Let's get to it." For some reason, the best of these contemporary-sounding phony names tend to be comprised of four syllables, and are usually the names of medical conditions.

A true Lingovation would be texticle, which would mean a very terse text message sent in great haste. But I've misdirected you; I've gotten into something interesting and verbal when this post (which has a deliberately tantalizing title) is a continuation of something dull and mathematical.

Notwithstanding the aforementioned, regarding the previous Braintenance post, I'll provide you with a briefing (a de-briefing would require that you dispense with your underwear) of how I arrived at our answers. More accurately, I'll show you the patterns that I recognized in order to arrive at my answers. Welcome back to Pattern Recognition, Cranial Comrades!

A) 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, ?  21 -- the difference between 3 and 1 is 2; the difference between 6 and 3 is 3; the difference between 10 and 6 is 4, and so forth. The pattern is an increase in the amount of the difference between the consecutive  by the addition of 1.

B) 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, ?  21 -- Fibonacci Sequence, anyone? Add any two consecutive numbers and you'll find the next one.

C) 1000, 0100, 0010, 0001, 1000 ? 0100 -- This is actually a repetitive "cycling" in the position of the "1" from the left to the right.

D) 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 ? 36 -- Each number is the square of a number in a simple arithmetic series; for example 1x1=1; 2x2=4; 3x3=9, and so on.

E) 200, 3000, 40000, 500000, ? 6000000 -- This one is quite basic. Each integer is following by a number of zeros equal to itself; for example 200 is 2 followed by two zeros; 3000 is 3 followed by three zeros, and so forth.

F) 1, 100, 2, 99, 3, 98, 4, ? 97 -- This one is a curiosity, indeed. It is actually a converging pattern, with the lowest number being 1 and the highest 100. Starting with 1, every other number is just increased by 1. Starting with 100, every other number is just decreased by 1. It is really two intertwined alternating sequences. Sort of reminds me of the double helix structure of DNA  (the famed Watson-Crick model).

G) 1.21, 2.32, 3.43, 4.54, ? 5.65 -- This one is best determined by superficial observation, and not by the relationship of each number to the one preceding it. The pattern is visual more than mathematical. Each number is [n]decimal point[n+1][n]. Just increase n by 1 to find the next number at any position in the sequence.

Pattern Recognition - The Answers.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

In my last post, I made some observations about the nature of intelligence, plasticity, cognition, learning and cognitive enhancement. Toward the end of that post, I left you with a group of simple (what a subjective term that is!) sequences to complete. Here they are again, with the next number (found through pattern recognition) placed there for you in red.

A) 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, ?  21

B) 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, ?  21

C) 1000, 0100, 0010, 0001, 1000 ? 0100

D) 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 ? 36

E) 200, 3000, 40000, 500000, ? 6000000

F) 1, 100, 2, 99, 3, 98, 4, ? 97

G) 1.21, 2.32, 3.43, 4.54, ? 5.65

---------------------
I'll let you ponder on those answers for a day or so. If you can't figure out how we arrived at them, don't fret. Some were tough. And I will show you the pattern underlying each of these sequences of numbers.

Observation: In verbal communications, we read between the lines. In numeric or alphanumeric pattern recognition, we must read between the items that comprise the series.

Expand Your Mind: Pattern Recognition

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Your mental capacity, plasticity, memory, recall and deductive reasoning are all dramatically enhanced by your ability to recognize patterns and to extrapolate (or generalize) from them. In some cerebral circles, the NICs (nerds-in-charge) refer to this phenomenon as "learning a rule." This notion has great applicability in the world of artificial intelligence (AI), but it is the shining key to a means of improving our own intelligence as well as increasing the actual speed of thought. Imagine being able to think faster because you are able to make 'connections' more rapidly? This skill is valuable to cultivate. Not surprisingly, it is a skill that can be improved by simple exercise.

Pattern recognition skills are involved in every aspect of gaming, athletics, problem-solving and life.  The more different (and complex) patterns that we are able to recognize from prior exposure, the easier and faster it will be for us to recognize new patterns. By the way, simple analogies actually involve pattern recognition. To illustrate, in solving the analogy query that follows, an association between things (associations are the building blocks of patterns) is necessary for us to get the right answer:

Horrible but memorable analogy, with multiple choice possibilities:

Fahrenheit is to Temperature, as...

a) Tuna is to Fish;
b) Oral is to Rectal;
c) Length is to Height;
d) Celsius is to Cold;
e) Inches is to Length;
f) Pitney is to Bowes;
g) Antihistamine is to Allergy;
h) Wet is to Rain.

The correct answer, of course, is choice e) Inches is to Length. The reason is that Fahrenheit is a means of measuring Temperature, and Inches is (are) a means of measuring Length.

Perhaps it's time for some practice. If you'll complete the sequences below (i.e., find the next item in each of the series), I promise that I'll have the answers for you by Monday this coming. These don't involve word-based analogies -- they are simply series of numbers. Do these - they're as stimulating as they are beneficial...

Incidentally, I dedicate this post to Technorati 4F3BBD7YKWFZ.

A) 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, ?

B) 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, ?

C) 1000, 0100, 0010, 0001, 1000 ?

D) 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 ?

E)  200, 3000, 40000, 500000, ?

F)  1, 100, 2, 99, 3, 98, 4, ?

G)  1.21, 2.32, 3.43, 4.54, ?
---------------------

That's all for now, fellow (and lady) Braintenance Buffs. We'll compare our answers on Monday.

Braintenance - Unusual Mathematical Properties...

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Take the darn thing out of storage and use it! There's a picture below, so you'll recognize it --

Legal Notice: The colors in the above diagram are for the purposes of clarification and emphasis only. Brains, generally speaking, are hardly this colorful. They are mostly a very plain oatmeal gray color, and have a "jello-like" consistency. I hope that this news does not disappoint you.

Braintenance - Unusual Mathematical Properties...

Note: This article was written by author Douglas Castle (http://aboutdouglascastle.blogspot.com/) for the official, award-winning and critically-acclaimed BRAINTENANCE blog -- the place to go to train and maintain your brain. Give your cerebral agility a jolt. Sharpen your cognitive capabilities. Your brain is a muscle, and it will thank you for giving it some vigorous exercise every day. This last part about your brain saying "thank you" was merely a figure of speech and should not be taken literally. If you hear a voice, seemingly coming from inside of your cranial vault saying "thank you," you should seek psychiatric treatment. If you wish to see more blogs, widgets and other materials from this self-important, pompous author, please click on http://www.douglascastleblogosphere.com/ .

Dear Cognitive Colleagues (and Eddie, from Bayside, Queens):

Some numbers have unusual and unique properties. Following is a list of questions for you to answer. Some of these are substantially more challenging than otheres -- but then again, the challenging ones make the easy ones seem even easier. This is just a quick practical observation about subjective measurement (i.e., we can only appreciate the size or difficulty of one thing by comparing it with the size or difficulty of another -- the comparison gives us a frame of reference).

If you can answer all of these questions, I'll try to get scholar and author Yossi Feigenson to buy you a cup of coffee...although I cannot guarantee this:

A)  What number, multiplied by itself or added to itself will yield the same answer in either case?

B)  What number, when divided into any other number will equal infinity?

C)  What number, when multiplied by any second number will always equal that second number?

D)  What three numbers, when either added together or multiplied by each other will yield the same answer?

E)  If infinity is divided into infinity, what will the correct answer be?

F)  What is the next number in this sequence?  2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, ___.

G)  What is the next number in this sequence?  2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, ___.

H)  What is the next number in this sequence?  3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28 ____.

I)  What is the next number in this sequence?  2, 6, 12, 20, 30, 42, ____.

J)  What is the next number in this sequence?  1, 10, 101, 1010, 10101, _____.

K) What is the next number in this sequence?  2345, 3452, _____.

L) What is the next number in this sequence?  8765, 7654, ____ .

Enjoy these, and come back again for the correct answers.

See you soon,

Douglas Castle
