Memorization Exercises To Boost Brainpower -- Braintenance -- Douglas E. Castle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Memorizing and being able to repeat certain types of sentences does more than build up your facility for rote memorization. The improvement in simple recall is actually the least of it! Memorizing the sentences which follow will strengthen your ability to visualize, organize and to think creatively. Memorize each of the seven sentences (or groups of sentences) which follow, one at a time. Then recite each one aloud several times. Get smarter, make more associative connections and have a bit of neural plasticity on the house! Ahoy, Braintenancers:

1) Let me repeat your order. You bought twenty apples, thirty oranges and fifteen bananas which you paid for using your Discover Card.

2) The parties agree that due to the many variables surrounding each business transaction that will occur because of this agreement, the commission to be paid between the parties may vary.

3) Contrarians don't generally agree with veterinarians who refuse to treat planarians with microscopic plantar warts.

4) She ran into the bathroom, slipped on the wet floor and fell downward, hitting her head on the side of the porcelain bathtub.

5) Can you tell me where the coffee cans can be hidden? Are they beneath the begonias in Mr. Brighton's flower bed?

6) He longed for lodging near the lakeside lounge area where his paramour was enjoying her pajama-clad paradise and pretending that those about her were not staring.

7) Two times seven equals fourteen, but if you add an additional six to the mix the total sum will soon become twenty, and as if that weren't plenty, if you multiply by three the result will be sixty.

Good luck with these, my fellow (and lady) Brainiacs. Do these Braintenance exercises and feel your cranial vault crawling with newly-inspired activity.

As always, thank you for reading me.

Learning Backwards: Braintenance Mind Jolt - Douglas E. Castle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Learning Backwards: Braintenance Mind-Jolt
How often have you heard of someone knowing something "backwards and forward(s)"?  There is a reason for this in the etymology of the expression itself: it is generally perceived as being difficult for people who have learned and memorized something in a particular order to be able to learn and memorize it in a different order. Learning something "backwards" requires a (with apologies to Liam Neeson) special skill set. The skills involved are used both consciously and subconsciously every day by most people. In learning backwards, you'll have to use these skills consciously -- at least at first.

These skills include visualization (visualizing the list of items with eyes closed), creating acronyms (using the first letter of each image to create a word) and sensory association (i.e., linking a group of things to a simple song, or making them part of a simple story).

The benefits to backwards learning are tremendous. The process stimulates memory and recall, improves cognition and improves creativity.

Following are some lists of items for you to learn "forwards" and backwards. Since I'm not proctoring this exercise, I'll trust that you will be able to recite each of the following lists without cheating. One hint: The most bizarre or humorous associations are generally the most memorable.
---------------

1) A B C D E F G H I

2)  5 1 6 7 8 5 1 0 4

3) Apple, Snake, Pickle, Bicycle, Ruler

4) Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet

5) Sulfur, Phosphorous, Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen

---------------

The video below provides an incredibly simple [oxymoron intentional] means of learning the entire alphabet backwards. This is a great way to be entertaining at social gatherings with friends who are either mathematicians or MENSA members...

Choose To Be Extraordinary - The Greatest Self-Fulfilling Prophesy

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Being extraordinary is a choice, according to Daniel Burris (a very extraordinary blogger) of BigThink, one of my favorite publications...

"Every now and then we hear about people who are doing extraordinary things. It could be a world leader saving millions of lives, a businessperson revolutionizing an industry, or even the person down the street helping to make life much better for underserved people in the community.

When we hear of these extraordinary people, the vast majority of people think, “I could never do that because I’m just an average, ordinary person.”

In reality, we can all be extraordinary. The key is to realize that being extraordinary is a personal choice. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re rich or financially struggling, whether you’re male or female, whether you’re old or young, or whether you fit into any other categories. Anyone can choose to be extraordinary."

If you are reading this article in The Braintenance Blog, you are already interested in being better than average. You are consciously evolving your mind and all of its powers. You can be extraordinary if you choose to be. It is the world's most  under-utilized self-fulfilling prophesy.

If you would like a mantra to say quietly to yourself several times per day, it could be something as simple as this:

I AM EXTRAORDINARY

I CAN DO EXTRAORDINARY THINGS

I  WILL ACHIEVE EXTRAORDINARY THINGS

BECAUSE I AM EXTRAORDINARY

I FEEL THE GREATNESS RISING UP INSIDE OF ME

FILLING ME WITH GREATNESS

GREATER STILL

AS I AM EXTRAORDINARY

It would be a great advantage if you were to actually to print this page out, and to actually read the words to yourself as you held the piece of paper in both hands. Tactile sensation increases intensity of meaning, thought and memory. Perhaps that is why printed and bound books will never entirely disappear.

Be extraordinary. You already are -- inside. Admit it to yourself, and with no excuses, go out into your life, into your great world of infinite possibilities, and do something extraordinary. Once you accept the fact that you are truly, undeniably extraordinary, you can proceed to do extraordinary things in an extraordinary way and live an extraordinary life.

Thank you for reading me, and for sharing my articles with your colleagues, connections, associates and friends using your social media sharing tools.

Douglas E. Castle

p.s. Please take a look at the page again, before you've printed it out. Ignoring the image (which is actually almost impossible), how many times have I used the word "extraordinary" in this article?

Trick Your Mind Into Expanding! - Braintenance

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

The above is unrealistic - If you are truly paying attention, you can focus your full awareness upon only one object or task at a time.

Braintenancers - You've seen advertisements and advertorials on TV about "tricking" and "confusing" your body's muscles into growth and clearer definition. This confusion theory is absolutely true and is genuinely effective. The mind responds the same way to confusion and the need for resolution, or to alternating between one type of thinking task and another. I have an interesting exercise which will force your brain to shift gears -- this initiates, creativity, imagination, cognition, memory and many other wonderful brain benefits.

The exercise is very simple, but is time-consuming, so please do it in the evening, when you have a clear hour-long block of time and nothing to interfere with your exercise and experience -- it only requires the following steps:

1) Listen to a binaural/subliminal entrainment audio recording which will stimulate those parts of the brain that heighten wakefulness (not nervousness or stress) and gear your state of mind to a razor-sharp focus.

2) Rest for one minute.

3) Listen to a binaural/subliminal entrainment audio recording which will give you a nice, relaxing dose of alpha; your mind's most free-flowing and creative state.

4) Listen to the first recording (as in step #1) again.

5) Rest for one minute.

6) Set a timer and spend five minutes digging deeply into your earliest childhood memories, with as much sensory and emotional detail as you can recall or relive.

7) Set a timer and spend five minutes picturing in full sensory detail the future which you truly wish for yourself. Think of it in very real terms as if you were 'in' that future.

That's all. Access to the two audios that you'll need is right here:

RAZOR-SHARP FOCUS

ALPHA STATE CREATIVE RELAXATION

Headphones would be of benefit, but are not required. Just sit back in a comfortable chair and be certain that the sound is loud enough to drown out any ambient noise.

You'll want to do this simple exercise once per week (on that "off" night), so be certain to bookmark this page or to make it a favorite. You'll notice changes in your mental dexterity and flexibility even after you've done this Braintenance Exercise only once. Do it once weekly, and not more frequently, as that would defeat the purpose.

"Confusion, and the body's and mind's innate need to sort things out, is one of the greatest initiators of real change, strengthening and growth." -DEC
