Train Your Brain - BRAINTENANCE Revisits Yahoo!

Dear Fellow (and Lady) Cranial Conquerors:

Quite by accident (fortuitously, surrendipitously, auspiciously...), I stumbled upon some brain-training fun and games whilst glancing (indifferently and snobbishly) over Yahoo!

Here's a wonderful link to make you think:

Self-Growth: The Reality.

Self-Growth: The Reality.

The Most Efficient Path to Self-Growth, by Douglas Castle, Vice-Chairman of The National Networker Companies.

*Commentary regarding a sales letter (not reproduced here) from David Riklan of SelfGrowth.com: "How 97.5 % of all Self Improvement Companies Grow their Businesses"

David Riklan publishes and produces the selfgrowth.com website and its ancillary businesses. He accepts articles written by many writers about various aspects of "self-growth." Some of these articles are very worthwhile reading, and an intelligent person can occasionally acquire a gold nugget of an idea by reading the material produced by his authors. His business grows itself by his authors' contributions of article content and fees. I admire his business model - it is a good one. But there are some serious negatives...

David Riklan is a pay-to-play proclaimer of "expert" status, and a purveyor of "experts" in the self-improvement field. He (through selfgrowth.com) hasn't achieved any great credibility (in my uniquely myopic and snobbish view) as yet and doesn't develop traction for his readers. He actually tried to get me to enlist (i.e. "pay") as an "expert," and eventually wanted to discuss my going to work for him. I declined, saying that I was intellectually incapable of holding my own in a room filled with so many other "experts." I humbly confessed that I, myself, needed a great deal of self-improvement before I could counsel others in all good conscience.

Almost every person with whom I come into contact (I usually wear gloves) is a "self-growth expert" or a "self-growth coach." I always ask myself (silently, of course, so as not to create a stir) several questions before I entertain engaging a coach or advisor:

1). Does he or she "walk the walk?" [is he or she the avatar of a self-improved creature?]
2). Would I want to emulate this person? Is her or she someone I admire?
3). Has he or she successfully coached others and generated appreciable results?
4). Can we work comfortably together?
5). Would he or she be audacious enough to refuse me as a client if I were perfectly willing to pay, but obviously demonstrated serious deficiences or limitations (in terms of ability or attitude)?

I have found that many people actually need more of a strategic path and plan than they do generic "self-improvement" tips. That is why I've chosen to be involved in strategic planning and organizational engineering instead of stand alone self-growth.

On the path to achieving a business or professional goal, an individual doubtless encounters numerous real-time, real-world difficulties which force him or her to make adaptations which are, by definition, "self-growth."

The best path to self-growth is through field testing and experience.

In brief (I frequently write while in my underwear), don't talk to me about camping --- take me on a rugged camping trip. Experience is the most potent teacher of all, and the multisensorial memories created through experience are much more readily memorable, accessible and credible than those learned in a casual or classroom environment.

We learn most effectively by observing, and then by doing.

Faithfully,

DouglasCastle

IRRELEVANT COMMENTS ON MY POSTS…
They’re Always Entertaining.

Dear Friends:

I am a staunch proponent of free speech as it was, some time ago, actually protected by the United States Constitution. It’s a delightful irony when some spammer or misguided soul posts an irrelevant or downright indecipherable comment on one of my blog posts for my consideration – it is at those times when I realize that the right to exercise “free speech” is sometimes actually interpreted by some to be synonymous with the right to promote “valueless speech,” which is something slightly different.

Here’s a great one that appeared in my inbox today regarding a post which I made on one of my old, inactive blogs. Before you read it, open a window, get a box of tissues and sit down in a comfortable chair.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Public Service Announcement: HEALTHCARE-ASSOCIATED...":

“good morning dudes. I'm honestly into shoes and I had been digging as far as something that meticulous brand. The prices seeking the boots were approximately 320 pounds everwhere. But finally I bring about this locate selling them someone is concerned half price. I really love those prada sneakers. I will absolutely purchase those. what can you tell me about these?”

Braintenance: INTELLIGENCE (AI, The Mind, The Computer)

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Braintenance: INTELLIGENCE (AI, The Mind, The Computer)

Dear Friends:

I hope that this brief missive finds you well. You'll need to get your energy together to give some serious thought to this question: "What is the definition of intelligence?"

It is a difficult question. How do we know when we've achieved a point of singularity with AI (Artificial Intelligence), if we don't exactly know what Human intelligence is? Scientists may well be busying themselves with trying to duplicate the superficial appearance or effect of intelligence without knowing its defining parameters and "cause". By way of example, you could cover a turd in a Snickers wrapper, and while there would certainly be a superficial resemblance, from the standpoint of function (and taste), you would not quite have duplicated the celebrated Snickers.

Knowledge is a body of information which one possesses.

Recall is the ability to summon the memory of that knowledge at will.

Generalization is the ability to recognize similarities between two separate sets of facts, or circumstances. In its most simplistic form, this is merely pattern recognition. If you are able to react appropriately to the pattern that you have recognized ("adaptation"), you have an important survival skill.

But what, exactly is intelligence? Is it a massive collection of minute but specific variables that, in composite, make us "smart" or "not so smart"? This is a big question. To read an interesting blog on AI and singularity, read my colleague Bruce Klein's blog which is attached to his company's website at http://www.novamente.com/ . The information there is fascinating.

Another question: Does the ability to form faster generalizations and react to them accordingly make us more intelligent? And, while we're confusing each other, how do artistic, literary and other "talents" factor into intelligence? Are these an alternative form of intelligence? Are these gifts an extra bonus above and beyond intellectual capacity? If you are a better problem-solver, does that mean that you are more intelligent than a philosopher who poses brilliant questions, or who presents imaginative hypotheses or possible explanations? Is the ability to ask the right questions as important as the ability to know how to solve problems in a given set of circumstances?

I don't know. Please advise me of your opinions regarding these issues.

Oh...by the way, can a man or woman program a machine to actually be more intelligent than he or she (the programmer) is? It seems somehow paradoxical. But then, I've met children who are far brighter than their parents.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

MULTIPLE MINDS - Exponentiality

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

I'm still on vacation. Ponder the following while you take a well-deserved break from problem-solving [as a matter of fact, your mind is always engaged in problem-solving...while you're awake...while you're dreaming; your thinking mechanism is not unlike a perpetual motion machine]:

"Followers are good...Participants are great... but Partners are even better. http://htxt.it/Svsv #TNNW #Braintenance." - from a Twitter post.

My comment: Good relationships are not merely additive (i.e., "let's put our heads together"); they are multiplicative. Intelligence can grow geometrically/ exponentially in a cohesive and cooperative group. Think of the notion of the MasterMind. Can you imagine the intellectual capacity of a creature whose every brain cell was, in fact, an entire mind? A successful team, group, partnership or organization is successful because it functions as a MasterMind.

Now, try to stop thinking about that...

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

I'M STILL ON VACATION, Which Rhymes with LINGOVATION

FROM THE TNNW DAILY EMAIL AND RSS NEWSFEED @ http://thenationalnetworkerweblog.blogspot.com/ .

Dear Readers:

I am bursting with joy. I received an email from an ardent fan (a woman with too much idle time on her hands and a husband who works for a long-distance hauling company) complimenting me on my invention of the terms OMNIGADGET, PROCRASTINERTIA and EXPONENTIALITY. She actually expressed gratitude for my having introduced these terms into the English language (American version), and into industry parlance. It was akin to receiving the Nobel Peace Prize (or winning $5.00 on a scratch-off lottery ticket). After my initial deluge of tears, I wrote her a brief thank-you note and decided to write this post.

Inventing terms, where existing language does not quite suffice, is a very fine means by which to accomplish several things simultaneously:

1. It helps to facilitate better, more precise communications -- to get your point across more efficiently;

2. It strengthens your personal brand, and the creates a mental link (in the minds of the masses) between you, as an individual, and a particular term which you've coined;

3. It gives you (and your newly-created term) high search engine prominence;

4. It forces new acquaintances, usually hard-won through rigorous networking, to ask you the question, "What does that mean?" Note: If they just nod their heads like dashboard bobbles, you know that they are either hard of hearing, embarrassed to admit ignorance (such is the Sin of Pride), or in a hurry to get to teir part of the conversation while impatiently tolerating yours...there are often body language signs which further affirm this, such as rapid toe-tapping, looking downward, staring at a wristwatch, yawning, or, in extreme cases, rapidly running off to the restroom. It's always helpful to know with some immediacy whether or not a person is actually interested in what you want to say;

5. It stimulates your imagination and enhances your cognitive ability - it's fun.

To illustrate the wonder of this hobby (inventing words, which I call "LINGOVATION") just try to imagine the unbridled joy of the person who coined the term "stagflation"... or, "spork"? Sadly for me, I had tried some years ago to popularize the term "FOON" with the objective of replacing the term "SPORK," but, like such other greats as Tesla, Galileo [I might have invented my own spelling here, too], Copernicus, Jackie Mason and Joan of Arc, I was subjected to great ridicule.
A truly pitiful example of an unimaginative, non-value-added lingovation is the "Wonkavator." Lingovation is little more than oratory excrement if it is not born of genuine innovation and a love of verbal communication. "Brangelina" speaks in stentorian tones of societal decay, and declining intellectual standards. These abuses of linguisitic license make me choke on my own bile.
One of my college roomates once referred to the binocular-laden patrons of the Audubon Society as "birdbrains." That was clever, but not a good example of a legitimate lingovation. I am certain that if you have been able to read this far (with at least 72% comprehension), you have the inherent potential (which latter word pairing is redundant) to become a Lingovator.
Participate in the evolution of the language -- become a LINGOVATOR.
Faithfully,
Douglas Castle
