Commitment+Control+Challenge=SUCCESS || Braintenance

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

While sifting through the vast quality of articles, newsletters and reports in my Braintenance Inbox, I came across  an interesting "News Release" written and distributed by PsychTests that truly resonated with me. It's about why some of us survive and actually thrive under the trials of adversity, while others crumble and become embittered to the point of immobility. Please read on...

Diagnosis: Attitude Problem – PsychTests’ Study Reveals How The Trait Of Resilience Affects Well-being

Research by PsychTests.com indicates that resilient people approach stress, challenge, and life in a way that boosts their well-being.

Montreal, Canada – November 3, 2015 – Attitude is everything. The Buddha wisely said that “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, not to anticipate the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.”

So what makes some people so resilient in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges? Research conducted at PsychTests using the Hardiness Test reveals that resilient people take a unique approach toward life that can be summed up in three words: Commitment, Control, and Challenge.

When people share stories that depict the indomitability of the human spirit – overcoming the physical and mental challenge of climbing Mount Everest, surviving in a war-torn country, conquering a potentially fatal illness – listeners and admirers can’t help but wonder two things: “Where did they get the strength to endure and fight?” and “If I were in their shoes, how could I have coped?”

Resilient, hardy, or mentally tough people view and approach their world in a unique way. A study conducted by the researchers at PsychTests reveals that these “tough cookies” do more than survive – they thrive. And the secret to their survival is a simple formula: Commit + Control + Challenge = Success.

Resilient individuals commit themselves to every activity they take on, no matter how trivial. They take responsibility for their actions and their life (i.e. they have an internal locus of control). Finally, they view a stressful situation as a challenge to overcome, rather than as a permanent setback or obstacle.

PsychTests’ research also reveals other information about how hardy people strive to thrive:

·        71% accept change when it is required (compared to 14% of people who are not hardy).
·        83% can find something enjoyable in even the most mundane tasks (compared to 2% of people who are not hardy).
·        98% are actively involved in hobbies or other leisure activities (compared to 50% of people who are not hardy).
·        91% believe that they are in full control of their destiny (compared to 26% of people who are not hardy).
·        93% look forward to their day (compared to 8% of people who are not hardy).
·        94% find ways to “spice up” everyday tasks (e.g. listening to music while cleaning; rewarding themselves after getting all the cleaning done, etc.), compared to 18% of people who are not hardy.
·        When they fail at something, 80% use it as motivation to try harder next time (compared to 5% of people who are not hardy).
·        In the last year, 18% of hardy people in the PsychTests’ study took more than 3 sick days last year. Of the people who are not hardy, 47% took more than 3 sick days.
·        58% of hardy people exercise 3 or more times per week, compared to 24% of people who are not hardy.
·        79% of hardy people eat a healthy diet, compared to 33% of people who are not hardy.

“Hardiness isn’t a trait you are born with. It’s built through trial, failure, determination, and perseverance,” explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests. “Resilient people still go through moments when they feel like giving up, or when they don’t see any possible solution to their problem – but they keep plodding on. They choose to believe that they will find a way out of the situation, and that things can and will get better. Most importantly, resilient people understand that the challenges they go through are not meant to break them but to make them stronger, wiser, and even more determined. And the only difference between hardy people and those who crumble under stress is not in their experiences, but rather how they interpret them. Resilience is a purely mental. Your ability to overcome a problem, setback, stressor, or challenge depends entirely on how you view it.”

PsychTests offers some tips to boost hardiness:

·        Take pleasure in the small victories. Even the hardest occupations have moments when you can stop and savor a job well done, a person helped, or a difficult task accomplished. By stopping for a moment to reflect on your accomplishment, you can begin to feel less overwhelmed and more satisfied with the work that you are doing.

·        Accept that you’re going to have bad days. Even people who are naturally positive, upbeat, and love what they are doing in life have a day where it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong does go awry. However, those bad days here and there don't stop them from appreciating the overall positives in their lives. If you tend to become pessimistic after a bad stretch, fight against the tendency by reminding yourself of the good things. And if a situation or issue is really becoming a thorn in your side, try taking the long view. Think about how you will feel about the situation in ten years. Either you will think nothing of it, or you will regret not doing anything. Regardless, you will gain motivation to move on with your life, either working to overcome the setback or to move on.

·        Take a step back when a challenge overwhelms you. Getting out of the situation for just a little bit will help you relax and put things in perspective. Try breathing techniques, meditation, or simply changing to a different task to get your mind off of the difficult undertaking. Sometimes, when a molehill looks like a mountain all it takes to regain perspective is to talk it over with a friend who can offer objective insight and help you outline steps for the future.

·        Know the benefits of having an internal locus of control. Although taking responsibility for your actions may sometimes cause you to feel disappointed in yourself (e.g. accepting blame for a failure), it also leads to greater self-motivation and a more active attitude towards life. People who feel that they have control over the outcome of their actions are more likely to take ownership of their behavior and exert a concentrated effort to learn, improve, and grow.

·        Eliminate "cognitive shortcuts.” These are automatic, habitual, deeply-ingrained and self-defeating ways of thinking, and often consist of some variation of the following: “I’ll never be able to do this because I’m too old/poor/weak/scared/uneducated/ugly/fat etc. These negative thoughts are surefire success-killers because they lead to self-fulfilling prophecies. Stop these shortcuts in their tracks. Dig deeper to determine why you feel this way about yourself. Is this something you were told growing up? Do you have proof that this thought is true? Are there examples of moments in your life when this was NOT true? What would be a better, healthier way of viewing this situation – and yourself?

Getting Things Done - Braintenance Technique

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

If you have had dreams, ambitions and objectives, you know that most of them are never achieved -- not because they were impossible, but because they were never even started. If you would like to get anything done, the key is to visualize what you desire (in terms of the outcome), and to then -- within 5 critical minutes of your visualization process -- take a first action toward that dream, ambition or objective, even if this action is simply reducing the idea to its essence and writing it on your "to do" list. Then within that same day, take a first physical action step (such as making a phone call, registering for an event, visiting a website, etc.) and pledge to yourself to take one additional action toward the furtherance of that which you are seeking to achieve per week at minimum.

The greatest acts and deeds are not achieved in giant steps -- they are achieved by incremental consistency; by working conscientiously, one action step at a time until your book is written, your song is recorded, your business is operating at a self-sustaining cash flow... whatever it is.

While the greatest ideas just emerge, seemingly magically, through bursts of energy in the mind, to live a life of self-actualization and accomplishment, you must 1) fully visualize them, 2) write them down on your "to do" list, 3) take a first physical action toward transforming that idea into a reality within that same day, and 4) follow a path made of increments toward your ultimate vision.

In summary:

THINK.
VISUALIZE.
WRITE IT DOWN.
TAKE A FIRST ACTION.
PROGRESS INCREMENTALLY.
GET IT DONE!

Knowledge Can Make You Rich

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Knowledge Can Make You Rich
But Only If You Are Intelligent Enough To Apply It;
And Even Then, Only If You Are Motivated To Use Your Intelligence.

But you must first understand and acknowledge what knowledge actually is. According to Wikipedia:

“Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness or understanding of someone or something, such as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is acquired through experience or education by perceiving, discovering, or learning. Knowledge can refer to a theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. It can be implicit (as with practical skill or expertise) or explicit (as with the theoretical understanding of a subject); it can be more or less formal or systematic.[1] In philosophy, the study of knowledge is called epistemology; the philosopher Plato famously defined knowledge as "justified true belief", though "well-justified true belief" is more complete as it accounts for the Gettier problems. However, several definitions of knowledge and theories to explain it exist.
Knowledge acquisition involves complex cognitive processes: perception, communication, and reasoning; while knowledge is also said to be related to the capacity of acknowledgment in human beings.[2]”
Intelligence (as this term is used in describing intellectual processes and processing, and as it is distinctly differentiated from “knowledge”), while its precise definition is the subject of much spirited debate, has to do with the ability to utilize knowledge to solve a problem or achieve an objective. If your intelligence is not utilized, it may well be the most costly mistake of your life. If it [intelligence] is applied to an increasing body of acquired knowledge, you can truly become as rich or as successful as you please.

Motivation is the drive to use this ability called “intelligence” in order to solve a problem, or in order to achieve an objective.

To put the whole picture together in the form of a rudimentary equation:

KNOWLEDGE + INTELLIGENCE + MOTIVATION = SUCCESS

Take a quick break from following the U.S. Mid-Term Elections (this post is dated November 2nd 2014) and please have a look at these free to subscribe e-newspapers, edited by Douglas E. Castle. We've scraped the web for the best news and commentary from the most reliable and authoritative sources available (wire services, newspapers, magazines, scholarly works, blogs and social media), and compiled it for you to either skim rapidly or to read in detail at your leisure. Be the smartest, best-informed person in any room or in attendance at any meeting [then again, don't act overly cocky or you're liable to incur the wrath of your colleagues, business associates and friends – Remember: nobody likes a smart***]. Average is typical. Intelligent and informed are exceptional. Which would you prefer to be? Do you resent rhetorical questions? Anyway, the underlined words and titles are hyperlinked for your clicking pleasure:

=> A new issue of Braintenance Express is out!
Strengthen your memory and increase your intelligence [cognition], creativity, imagination, vocabulary and computational skills. Train, strain, maintain and strengthen your brain with Braintenance news, games, puzzles and fascinating facts.

=> A new issue of Crowdfunding 360 is out!
Read the most current news, commentary, analysis, trend reports and other interesting and useful information about crowdfunding trends, deals, platforms and people. You'll also pick up useful tools, tips and tricks to make your crowdfunding campaign more successful.

=> A new issue of Douglas E. Castle Business Advisory is out!
Need I say more? While this looks like brazen, shameless self-promotion [and I'm not saying that it isn't], the information in this e-newspaper relates to various crucial aspects of entrepreneurial projects as well as small- to medium-sized businesses. The information varies from day to day, but it covers the fields of finance, management, marketing, accounting, regulation, best practices, technology and trends, in both the B2B and B2C environments. But then I've already said too much...

=> A new issue of The Undercurrent =>|<= is out!
Great news, commentary and trend reports about industrial intelligence, executive protection, data security, workplace safety and a host of other intriguing things happening behind the scenes in business.

=> A new issue of World Disruption And Commentary is out!
This is possibly the country's best compilation of news, commentary and trends [possibly a slight exaggeration] about industry, product and technological disruption and disruptors, covering new births as well as extinctions, both at present [in real-time] and as projected. Disruption and displacement will be the death knell for some products, companies, industries and investments, but will present profitable arbitrage opportunities for those who are in the know and act on these insights.

Choose To Be Extraordinary - The Greatest Self-Fulfilling Prophesy

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Being extraordinary is a choice, according to Daniel Burris (a very extraordinary blogger) of BigThink, one of my favorite publications...

"Every now and then we hear about people who are doing extraordinary things. It could be a world leader saving millions of lives, a businessperson revolutionizing an industry, or even the person down the street helping to make life much better for underserved people in the community.

When we hear of these extraordinary people, the vast majority of people think, “I could never do that because I’m just an average, ordinary person.”

In reality, we can all be extraordinary. The key is to realize that being extraordinary is a personal choice. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re rich or financially struggling, whether you’re male or female, whether you’re old or young, or whether you fit into any other categories. Anyone can choose to be extraordinary."

If you are reading this article in The Braintenance Blog, you are already interested in being better than average. You are consciously evolving your mind and all of its powers. You can be extraordinary if you choose to be. It is the world's most  under-utilized self-fulfilling prophesy.

If you would like a mantra to say quietly to yourself several times per day, it could be something as simple as this:

I AM EXTRAORDINARY

I CAN DO EXTRAORDINARY THINGS

I  WILL ACHIEVE EXTRAORDINARY THINGS

BECAUSE I AM EXTRAORDINARY

I FEEL THE GREATNESS RISING UP INSIDE OF ME

FILLING ME WITH GREATNESS

GREATER STILL

AS I AM EXTRAORDINARY

It would be a great advantage if you were to actually to print this page out, and to actually read the words to yourself as you held the piece of paper in both hands. Tactile sensation increases intensity of meaning, thought and memory. Perhaps that is why printed and bound books will never entirely disappear.

Be extraordinary. You already are -- inside. Admit it to yourself, and with no excuses, go out into your life, into your great world of infinite possibilities, and do something extraordinary. Once you accept the fact that you are truly, undeniably extraordinary, you can proceed to do extraordinary things in an extraordinary way and live an extraordinary life.

Thank you for reading me, and for sharing my articles with your colleagues, connections, associates and friends using your social media sharing tools.

Douglas E. Castle

p.s. Please take a look at the page again, before you've printed it out. Ignoring the image (which is actually almost impossible), how many times have I used the word "extraordinary" in this article?

Meditation: Program Yourself For Success

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Self-hypnosis, NLP, future visualization, subliminal suggestion and the notion of The Law Of Attraction may or may not be part of your belief system. I know that many of our readers of The Braintenance Blog are quite skeptical about anything that they cannot examine fully with their conscious senses -- even then they tend to be doubtful. There is nothing wrong with belief systems, unless they inhibit your self-growth, professional development, achievement of your objectives or your happiness. In such cases, subtle re-programming can and does work wonders.

The secret lies in the ability to open your mind, suspend conditioned disbelief, and simply enjoy the experience. While great expectations are wonderful, they can set you up for disappointment.

My preferred approach is to 'let the experience take me wherever it will,' and to just permit myself to let whatever happens happen.

The best expectation orientation is to just enjoy the experience...to just let it enter you.

After reading the small print on the image below, click on it and listen to a very relaxing imagination exercise in future visioning (provided by Real Subliminal)

Toward the end of the pleasant little mind excursion there is a gentle, no-stress sales discussion. Listen to that as well. You'll find the speaker's voice continuing to be relaxing, without disturbing your mood in the slightest.

Take a bit of time for yourself - Just YOU - And enjoy this audio visual presentation. If you are like I am, you will enjoy the experience more, if you fully relax, eyes closed and just focus in on the voice...Just the voice.

Do try it. Evening seems to work best, and as with all programs such as this one, don't drive or do anything requiring coordination or sharp judgment until a good 15 minutes after the mind journey has ended.

I hope that you've enjoyed your brief journey. While you're in the neighborhood, click on some of the tabs on the home page [right under the blog title heading] and find yourself some mind calisthenics (brain training exercises) to play with.

Your mind is a muscle - the more you exercise it, the more powerful it becomes.

Thank you as always for reading me! :-)
