BRAINTENANCE: Some recursive, circuit-busting questions.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

I have some questions which I am having a dificult time answering. Perhaps you can help me. I would be grateful for your assistance -- especially if that assistance takes the form of solid answers:

Here they are:

1. How do you conduct a war against war?

2. How can there be such a term as "civil unrest"?

3. How come a triangle is the only polygon which contains only 180 degrees, while every other polygon with more than three sides contains 360 degrees.

4. How can a food which we have never tasted, seen or smelled be determined (by us) to be something "we don't like."

5. How do we determine whether an object, or a thing, is "alive" or "inanimate"?

6. The pineal body (nested deep inside the brain) is he only crystalline structure in the entire human form. What are the possible implications of that?

7. Which is the more powerful influence and why: nature (your genetic circuitry), or nurture (your environment and the circumstances of your life).

8. Do opposites attract, or does "like attract like"? Are there any special qualifying cases or conditions which influence your answer?

9. Distinguish between the meanings of the words, as questions: "why?" and "how?"

10. When our conscience warns us against committing a particular act, is it our own nature speaking, or is our own true nature to do things without thought to the effect on others? Is the voice of conscience our own voice? Does it originate as part of our nature, or is it external to us?

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

BRAINTENANCE - A Riddle Within a Riddle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

A Riddle Within a Riddle:
1) God in the Mind of Man...and
2) Man in the Mind of God.

This Article Was Originally Published in BRAINTENANCE: MIND BUILDERS, at http://Braintenance.blogspot.com by Author Douglas Castle [http://aboutdouglascastle.blogspot.com/]

Dear Friends:

I ask you to read what follows with a view toward expanding your mind...to thinking beyond the imagined limitations of your own thought processes. This process, in itself, is deeply meditative, vigorously enlightening and a powerful opportunity at a uniquely detached form of self-awareness. The simplest way to describe this last form of self-awareness is to "be as if standing outside of yourself, and intellectually observing yourself." It is an infinitely recursive potential for an inner journey. Comically, and carried to an extreme, it is ultimately like watching yourself watching yourself in a mirror.

Here are some preliminary thoughts, to prime the cerebral engine:

1. The existence of God cannot be scientifically proven;

2. The non-existence of God cannot be scientifically proven;

3. Belief in God is based upon faith;

4. Faith is a belief in something based either upon: some knowledge or inclination (whether intuitive, instinctual, or developed through other revelatory means) not acquired through any of the acknowledged senses or science, or b) which may be a psysiological or emotional mechanism for dealing with fear, the unexplainable, or a quest for reason in all things experienced in life. Everyone has faith in something or someone, either because of the necessity for faith as a defense (a survival mechanism which strengthens our resolve during times of great stress or threat), or because of desire for a good thing to either be true or to come to fruition.

5. Some claim that Man had to have invented God for a variety of reasons, but many today believe that we may be biochemically hard-wired to believe in God, and that we may have a certain need to believe in him. My questions are:

What great master programmer or force created or designed us with such a powerful compulsion, propensity or a need to believe in God, or in a Creator? If this was indeed done toward for some deliberate purpose, might this purpose be a basis of commonality necessary to our survival (recognizing our beligerance toward each other and our violent aspects) as a species?

Questioning my doubts about God's existence when I was in my twenties, a good friend of mine said, "Don't worry. Just because you don't believe in Him doesn't mean that He doesn't believe in you."

Did Man Create God to simply abdicate responsibility and to explain complicated phenomena? Is it possible that God created within Man the need to believe in Him, or in a creator of His magnificent magnitude? Did God create a "hunger" in Man for faith, and for belief? Who was the cause and who was the effect?

Here's the subject article, which I have excerpted from a recent review of a book (which I have not yet read) by the editorial staff, reviewers and critics at BuzzFlash.com:
####

Did People Create God, Rather Than the Other Way Around?
Bestselling "The Evolution of God" (Hardcover) -- 576 Pages
by: Robert Wright
BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt):

"In this bestselling book, Robert Wright exhaustively explores monotheism as a way of coping with the world. That is to say, the creation of a God is a "hot-wired" sociological attempt to cope with some sort of moral order.Wright presents an optimism that in the face of a world without the "concept" of God, anarchy would prevail.

He looks at the overall trajectory of religious evolution, which allows him to explain the wars fought because of religion as deviations from an overall trend of acceptance.Wright is hardly for the true believer, in that he explains the development of Christianity, for instance, as one of political negotiation and marketing savvy.

But he offers dazzling insights into why most men and women need a God -- and that religion is, perhaps, preferable in terms of social order than warring tribal identities, because it offers the possibility of "negotiated" reconciliation between religions that supersede national and tribal identities. You can watch Robert Wright talk about the book by clicking here.

Obviously, this is a provocative, thoughtful reflection on how God was created due to social needs -- and that there may be, ironically, something mystically divine in that need, although without the dogma of any given religion. Fascinating stuff.

"In his brilliant new book, The Evolution of God, Robert Wright tells the story of how God grew up. He starts with the deities of hunter-gatherer tribes, moves to those of chiefdoms and nations, then on to the polytheism of the early Israelites and the monotheism that followed, and then to the New Testament and the Koran, before finishing off with the modern multinational Gods of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Wright's tone is reasoned and careful, even hesitant, throughout, and it is nice to read about issues like the morality of Christ and the meaning of jihad without getting the feeling that you are being shouted at. His views, though, are provocative and controversial. There is something here to annoy almost everyone."-- Paul Bloom, New York Times.

BRAINTENANCE: WORDS

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

People seem so obsessed with possessing a good vocabulary. While I agree, in great part, I feel that it is more important to choose your words carefully. If you want to communicate effectively, combine some basic behavioral psychology and some neurolinguistic training (or some variant of NLP) with your personal lexicon expansion directive... (How 'bout that?).

THIS ARTICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED by Douglas Castle in HUMANITAS MAXIMUS (http://HumanitasMaximus.blogspot.com)

Dear Friends:

Words are tools. They can comfort and they can hurt. They can be calm and reassuring -- but they can also be weapons; weapons to cause irreparable hurt to others, and weapons to cause irreparable hurt and regret to yourself. We are judged by our words. Choose them wisely, and choose them well.

Obama says words ill chosen, calls white policeman (AP)
AP - Trying to tamp down a national uproar over race, President Barack Obama acknowledged Friday he had used unfortunate words in declaring that Cambridge, Mass., police "acted stupidly" in arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. "I could've calibrated those words differently," he said.

A good vocabulary, and a good general command of your communications techniques is extremely important. But what is equally, if not more important, is to take the time required to foresee the effects that your words may have upon others, and to use them with great caution and delicacy. Choose your words with your audience's sensitivities in mind. Don't risk being misunderstood. Think first -- then speak.

Respect the power of words.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

BRAINTENANCE: About Those Nuts...

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Let's revisit a problem from almost two weeks ago:

If I work on a quality control line at the Zenobia Nut Company, and I routinely eliminate 10% of the nuts which pass me by because they (presumably) don't meet my exacting nut standards, 90% of the nuts will be left over. If a certain practical joker at the company knows that I routinely cull 10% of any given batch of nuts simply because of my unmedicated Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and he keeps re-cycling the remaining nuts by me for my inspection/ selection process time after time, how many passes (including the first) will it take for me to have eliminated 30% of the original batch of nuts? Remember: on the second pass, the total batch is only 90% of the size of the original batch.

This problem is the opposite side of the compound interest coin. In compounding, the "base" principal at the beginning of each successive period is increased. In dealing with our nuts, each time we see a batch, it is smaller than the one which preceded it...disturbingly, although I keep consistently eliminating 10% of the nuts on each pass, the initial amount keeps getting reduced so the amount of nuts which I actually toss away keeps getting reduced, as well. This phenomenon is called the "declining balance effect". Every time I go through this process, I am having a decreasing effect on reducing the amount of nuts. In fact, if I carried this process on indefinitely, I would never actually wind up at zero (i.e., nutless).

By way of example: I start with 1,000 nuts, and I want to get down to 700 nuts (70% of the starting amount). Sadly, I cannot simply get rid of 100 nuts (10% of the original amount) at each pass, which would get us down to 700 in exactly three passes. The number of passes will have to be greater than three. BRAINTENANCE IS A VERY, VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS

UNITED AIRLINES SHOULD BE GROUNDED.

This article reprinted from Douglas Castle's Self-Serving Blog at http://aboutDouglasCastle.blogspot.com . The author writes for THE NATIONAL NETWORKER Newsletter...he insists that you get your free subscription today (this second!) at http://twitlik.com/OK or he will be deeply offended and will not send you a card, nut log or fruit basket [everyone's favorite] during the holiday season (only kidding). The author makes idle threats, and also uses different-colored type because he enjoys it.

Dear Friends (and Foes, alike):

The embedded YouTube video, performed by the band Sons Of Maxwell and written by Dave Carroll Music expresses every airline traveler's worst fear (while safely on the ground!) when he or she looks out his/her window and sees what the baggage handlers are actually doing with passenger luggage. This video is hysterical -- and politically incorrect, depending upon which side of the Rio Grande River you might have originally come from, with or without documentation. Note: My sister sent me this video, so if you do not find it absolutely gut-splitting, please hold her fully responsible.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

BRAINTENANCE: Frequency 528

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:
Greetings!

Just a quick review...please be certain that you've completed the exciting BRAINTENANCE exercises in the last post, http://braintenance.blogspot.com/2009/07/braintenance-screedindeed.html. If you haven't...well then do it after the next part.

FREQUENCY 528 Hz

For a number of years, some esoteric physicists (I see one twice yearly to clean my cosmic wormholes and charm my quarks), cellular biologists and alternative healers of various types have been exploring the possibility that listening to the sound of Frequency 528 Hz, which is sometimes called the Solfeggio Frequency or the Love Frequency can actually heal damaged DNA, re-energize the body and elevate the mood.

I believe that this is at least partly true -- although I do not dispense healthcare or medical advice -- that when you spend 5 or 10 minutes listening to Frequency 528, you somehow seem to feel mentally (and psychically) rejuvenated. It may well be worthwhile for you to try.

Scroll up on this blog (http://braintenance.blogspot.com/) until you get to a place labeled EXERCISE YOUR MIND 6: MEDITATION, STIMULATION AND RELAXATION...you'll recognize it because it has a big YouTube video screen embedded into it. When you click on each of the video frames on the right-hand side of the video player, you'll see it's number. Go to Video #9 (titled: frequency 528), click on it, sit back and listen. Be patient...give it at least five minutes.

Let me know what you think.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

BRAINTENANCE: Screed?....Indeed!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

I dislike writing in the Arial font. I prefer Times Roman, Bookman Old Style or Goudy Old Style. When I've used Copper Plate (admittedly, an archaic font), smart-alecky friends have remarked that my documents looked like "funeral announcements." Sometimes I think that my friends are the ones who openly criticize me, and my enemies are the ones who continue to smile despite the fact that my fly is open, there is toilet paper trailing from my shoe, or I have a piece of spinach the size of a cellular telephone lodged between my teeth. Anyway, enough about me.

How about you? Here are some items for your cerebration (never be too lazy to use a dictionary to confirm your guesses at word definitions through "use in context"):

1. 87.5% of Americans (the English-speaking ones) do not know what the word "screed" means. They're flummoxed. http://twitlik.com/screed
Posted to Twitter at 07:39 PM on 07/01/2009.

3. Where in blazes are your Haikus? Create a few and place them in the "Comments" section at the bottom of this post. If you don't know what a Haiku is, simply refer to the last post at http://braintenance.blogspot.com/2009/06/braintenance-do-you-haiku.html. These Japanese-inspired poem forms are a wonderful mental exercise. C'mon. My life's ambition (the other one) is to publish a volume of Haiku producted by my fellow Braintenance enthusiasts. As you may recall, my sample Haiku (comprised of 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third) was:

I have walked these streets
In my hours of loneliness
Hearing your last words

Now...get to work!

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
