Brainstorming - A Very Useful Tool If Used Properly - BRAINTENANCE

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Brainstorming - A Very Useful Tool If Used Properly -

BRAINTENANCE  (http://braintenance.blogspot.com/)

Dear Readers:

Brainstorming is a process where a group of persons get together and develop fresh ideas and approaches to creative problem-solving by using a combination of processes:

1. Free Association - Where a person's word or an idea sparks another word or idea.

2. Free Group Interaction - Where a word or an idea from one person sparks a word or idea in another.

3. Construction - Where the first two processes lead to the spontaneous construction of a method or mechanism that did not exist (or could not have been readily seen) before. Usually an exciting idea which emerges out of the first two processes has sufficient gravity and fascination so as to create a foundation upon which the collaborative group builds something, with each member contributing some material, or some refinement of material.

Brainstorming is an integral component of the Mastermind Effect, and has the added bonuses of producing increased trust and cameraderie, greater spontaneity of communications, and enhanced creativity on the part of the group and on the part of every member.
---------------

Here are some very important guidelines for the Brainstorming Process, contributed by http://www.creativethinkingwith.com/. Please review them, take them seriously, and begin to integrate the creative, social and inspirational process of hosting regular brainstorming sessions. The Human Mind needs a vacation from hyper-discipline and prolonged focus in order to keep its most creative potentials from atrophying:

Creative Thinking
With Brainstorming

New ways to use Brainstorming, the classic creative thinking technique

Brainstorming remains one of the most effective creative thinking techniques in use today. With it's policy of non-judgement and rapid fire spitting out of ideas that spark off one another, it's a real firecracker way to generate quality new insights, breakthroughs and innovations. Invented within the advertising industry by Alex Osborn way back in the early 1940's, brainstorming has enjoyed over 60 years of continuous use, refinement and development.

Nowadays you are as likely to sit down with brainstorming software as within the traditional group setting of between 6 and 12 people. That said, companies across the world still use formalised group brainstorming as part of their R&D, marketing, and right across the board of their departments to try and push the envelope in a kaizen quest for improvement and more profits.

Whether you choose to practice brainstorming alone (with a pad and pen, or using your PC brainstorming software), with a partner, or in the traditional setting of a group of 6-12, there are certain guidelines you'll want to follow to maximise your creative thinking experience.

The primary thought to sustain when you brainstorm is: NO JUDGEMENT!

You accept that for the period of your brainstorm session, you will set aside the internal editor, your logical rational mind. You leave the Judge and Jury at the door, and accept that a lot of your ideas may fall within the realms of the impossible, the ludicrous and the banal. That's okay... ideas come in a heirarchy of usefulness and they travel in packs or families. And just like any family, some of ideas within the family will be annoying, others stupid and yet there may be family member supported within the group that shines out.

The mind works in mysterious ways and one of its greatest mysteries is how an excellent idea can be supported, sustained by or built from really awful ideas. So, remember, during a brainstorming session, judge nothing and accept all ideas as having a right to exist and a potential usefulness.

All Brainstorming Begins With A Creative Challenge

A fire is started with a spark. Your 'spark' to unleash a brainstorming inferno is your set-up, the creative challenge you lay before yourself or the participants. Think of various different ways of structuring the description of your creative challenge. The mindset with which you approach a  problem will determine the direction that you set off in pursuit of an answer. By asking the question in a variety of different ways, you reframe the problem and affect the answers you get from brainstorming. By looking at the challenge from as many different perspectives as possible, you move the target scope cross-hairs across the landscape of your creativity. And you'll hit a lot more unique ideas.

Perspective: One Person's Catastrophe Is Another's Opportunity - BRAINTENANCE

Perspective: One Person's Catastrophe Is Another's Opportunity - BRAINTENANCE

Dear Readers and Member's of Aunt Rose's Mah Jongg (sp?) Group in North Palm Beach, Florida:

As soon as the Internet became a medium for mass communication in regular use, over-aggressive marketers began sending spam to email addresses, social media sites, networking groups, blogs and everywhere they might be able to get their unauthorized and generally unwelcome messages to groups of people.

After a brief period of time, robots (automation programs for repetitive processes) came into use for the purpose of accelerating and broadening the spread of spam ("spam on steroids!").

In order to thward these literary litterers, the CAPTCHA code program was devised by some very good "white hat" programmers out of Princeton University (then again, it might have been Phoenix University, DeVry, Katherine Gibbs, or Ball State, but I don't think so -- I should use spelllcheck and a fact-checker, but I'm a) too cocky and b) too cheap) developed the CAPTCHA process to keep robots from spamming us.

The idea was to use a string of machine-distorted letters and numbers (which could theoretically be read only by Humans, and perhaps well-trained weasels) which had to be interpreted and reproduced in order to access a website or application. The idea was, in principle, a great one -- keep the robots out, and only let hard-working Human Beings (and the occasionally trained weasel) to gain access to sight if it could prove that it was not a robot by passing the CAPTCHA test code at the portal of entry.

This created a disaster for many of the marketers who had been become utterly dependent upon robots to spread their solicitations and other messages (categorically, "spam"). These people were being put out of business.

But the cries of spam-marketers were heard by some "black hat" geeks who saw that a new market (i.e., businesses that were dependent upon spam for their proliferation and profits) had opened up to them. These entrepreneurs have since created numerous programs to bypass and otherwise thwart the CAPTCHA code.

In fact if you google the term CAPTCHA you'll find some great information. If you then google the terms CAPTCHA code bypass you'll find a host of means of bypassing the CAPTCHA qualifier.

Given some time, there will be another generation of CAPTCHA-purposed programs which will defeat these CAPTCHA code bypass tools.

The pendulum swings, creating catastrophes and new markets with every stroke.

Solve a problem, and you've addressed the needs of a market.

Create a problem, and you've opened up another, new market.

Catastrophe and Opportunity are opposite sides of the same coin.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Quick Vision Test 1 - Are You Colorblind? - Red/Green Colorblindness

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Quick Vision Test 1 - Are You Colorblind? - Red/Green Colorblindness

Dear Friends:

There are multiple types of colorblindness, and a large percentage of the world's population suffers (unknowingly) with some form of colorblindness which impairs visual experience and makes learning more difficult. Braintenance (http://Braintenance.blogspot.com) has found some picture samples for you to use in order to test yourself.

If you find that you suffer some form of colorblindness, bear in mind that most people do, in some form and to some extent. You might want to visit your opthomologist for explanations and some suggestions for some creative means of correcting or compensating for this perceptual challenge. You would be amazed at the number of people who spend years being challenged with colorblindness and do not even realize it!

The tests below are for Red/Green Colorblindness, but there are a number of other types of colorblindness (such as Blue/Yellow) across a spectrum [no pun intended] of possibilities :

Individuals with Red-Green color blindness should read the number 2. Others will see the number 5.

Individuals with Red-Green color blindness should read the number 56, as should most of us.

Red-Green color blind should not be able to read any numeral but the rest of us should see the numeral 6

Individuals with Red-Green color blindness should read the number 5, while the rest of us should see the numeral 3.

Individuals with Red-Green color blindness should read the number 70, while the rest of us will tend to see the numeral 29.

Individuals with Red-Green color blindness should read the number 21, while the rest of us should see the numeral 74.

Red-Green color blind should not be able to read any numeral, but the rest of us can see the numeral 8.

Individuals with Red-Green color blindness should read the number 17, while the rest of us will tend to see the numeral 15.

---------------

The possibilities for confusion, encryption (hiding messages in plain sight), subliminal messaging and learning issues are tremendous. Happily, many common varieties of color blindness can be treated with tremendous success.

Following are some links to resources with more information about the causes, effects and cures for color blindness, provided by the ever-popular and increasingly dominant Google Search Engine:

Oxymorons and Euphemisms

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Oxymorons and euphemisms are fascinating modes of either expressing conflictory comments, or of stating bad news or facts with minimum offense, the least emotional impact potential, or in a "silver lining" --- "But the Good News, is..." fashion. Both are great fun. Before we continue, let's be certain we know the difference:

"Civil War" is a frequently used oxymoron. "Civil Unrest" is a euphemism-tinged oxymoron. "Putting the dog to sleep" is a euphemism. "Ethnic Cleansing" is an incredibly audacious euphemism -- equating "cleansing" with "genocide" is quite a stretch.

"The People's Republic of China" is a euphemism-tinged oxymoron.

When somebody from the government or from BP (British Petroluem) speaks of the greatest ecological catastrophy in recorded history, and says, "The worst is over now. Most of the oil has evaporated or has been 'dispersed', and the waters around the Gulf are completely safe," he or she is simply a "moron." When BP takes out advertisements on television talking about, "...and BP will be here for you, and we won't leave until we make this right." --- well, that is an "insult to everyone's intelligence."

Faithfully,

The Best Times To Submit News Releases - and - The Best Times To Send Emails

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Little-Known Facts Of Great Significance
A BRAINTENANCE EXTRA! http://braintenance.blogspot.com/

The Best Times To Submit News Releases -and- The Best Times To Send Emails

Object: Maximize the effectiveness of your communications by optimizing timing.

Most of the news releases submitted on a Friday will be posted (by media) on Tuesday -- a two business day delay. The best days for a press release to "land" (i.e., to be published) in the media are on Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, and Thursday. Because of 1-2 business day publishing delays, the best (and safest) days to submit news releases to the wire services are on Friday, Monday and Tuesday for maximum effectiveness.

In contrast, the best days to get your direct emails to be opened by recipients are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The worst days for recipients to receive your emails are Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Monday is the worst of the worst -- it's when you get the least attention, and maximum deletion. People can even get angry at you for filling up their inboxes to bursting when they've gone to face their accumulated email mountain after a weekend of being away from the rigors of work.

Irony: The best day to get your News Release published is on a Monday (Tuesday is also quite good), while it is the worst day to have anyone receive your email campaigns.

BRAINTENANCE: Riddles - Great Anti-Aging Exercise for the Brain!

Dear Brain Trainers, Maintainers and Occasional Complainers:

Riddles - simple word puzzles - are a wonderful and highly entertaining means of keeping your brain (and your associated mind) in superb shape. Solving riddles increases blood circulation and neuronal plasticity. This exercise calls into play your recall, associative intelligence, vocabulary skills, differentiation skills involving shades or meaning and irony...just to name several. Thinking is a wonderful exercise: particularly if it is positive, productive and challenging.

Here are several from the Riddler, himself, courtesy of http://www.buzzle.com/:

Just click on the link for some great puzzles and answers...

http://www.buzzle.com/articles/riddles-and-answers.html

Target Objective: Solve ten riddles during the course of the day today.

You're quite welcome, Mr. President. By the way, neither animals nor fossil fuels have been used in the presentation of the above riddles. They are non-partisan and politically correct. I hope that I am not being too ambitious in saying that our politicians, both Democratic and Republican, could probably use this form of mental exercise and stimulation. It would be good for the whole country.

Fun With Brain-Twisting Homonyms and Wacky Irony - Douglas Castle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Fun With Brain-Twisting Homonyms and Wacky Irony - Douglas Castle

NOTE: This article was originally published to the BRAINTENANCE Blog (http://Braintenance.blogspot.com)

Dear Fellow Brain-Builders:

The following is brought to you by Dictionary.com:
Homonym, homophone,  and homograph  designate words that are identical to other words in spelling or pronunciation, or both, while differing from them in meaning and usually in origin. Homophones  are words that sound alike, whether or not they are spelled differently. The words pear  “fruit,” pare  “cut off,” and pair  “two of a kind” are homophones  that are different in spelling; bear  “carry; support” and bear  “animal” are homophones  that are spelled alike. Homographs  are words that are spelled identically but may or may not share a pronunciation. Spruce  “tree” and spruce  “neat” are homographs,  but so are row /roʊ/ Show Spelled[roh] Show IPA “line” and row /raʊ/[rou] “fight” as well as sewer /ˈsuər/[soo-er] “conduit for waste” and sewer /ˈsoʊər/[soh-er] “person who sews.” Homonyms  are, in the strictest sense, both homophones  and homographs,  alike in spelling and  pronunciation, as the two forms bear. Homonym,  however, is used more frequently than homophone,  a technical term, when referring to words with the same pronunciation without regard to spelling. Homonym  is also used as a synonym of homograph.  Thus, it has taken on a broader scope than either of the other two terms and is often the term of choice in a nontechnical context.
---------------

The wonderful wordplays which follow are quite humorous and were forwarded to me by Dr. Daniel J. Benor. They utilize homonyms, irony, innuendo and double entendres (that's French!) in order to make us 1) think and 2) laugh. Incidentally, the four referenced techniques and devices are referred to (you heard it here first!) as TWISTICISMS, a Lingovation created by yours truly. Please take a moment and Google the term "twisticisms".

Now enjoy the twisticized wordplays which Dr. Benor was kind enough to forward to me:

Braintenance: Word Power and Food For Thought - Douglas Castle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

BRAINTENANCE - WORD POWER AND FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
Dear Friends:

1. The following terrific new research subjects and vocabulary words come to us through http://www.dictionary.com/ . Have a look at them - Growing your word power is an important part of keeping your mind agile.

2.  Ponder this: After a long series of recurring patterns, how can we identify which is the actual originating cause of the pattern, and which is the effect?

3.  Ponder this: In the current world economy, which might be the better of these two strategies for the survival of individuals and smaller business enterprises, and why?
  • Divide and conquer; or,

  • Unite and dominate ?
If both strategies have merit, under which circumstances would a person or a company be advised to use each of them?

Can You Solve This Problem? - Braintenance

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Braintenance Pals and Gals:

Can you solve this problem? It just requires that you read carefully, and apply a bit of rudimentary algebra. It may seem tougher than it is -- everyone in my neighborhood is intimidated by squares and square roots. Don't be!

What number, when squared, increased by itself, and then divided by 4 will equal 2 times itself?

Are You A Spender Or An Investor?

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Are You A Spender Or An Investor?

Dear Friends:

It's time for a brief but important self-assessment.

Some people spend their time placing blame and complaining.

Some people invest their time finding solutions and solving problems.

Q: Are you a spender or an investor?

Hint: Be very candid with yourself. If you are too much of a spender, you can begin to become more of an investor. And-- when you spend, your resources become depleted, while when you invest (and invest well), your resources grow.

Think about it.

Braintenance: The Unanswered Question*

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Braintenance: The Unanswered Question*

Dear Fellow (and Lady) Cerebral Celebrants:

I have done it more than once. Here is the typical scenario:

I  post a question to which I have requested an answer from you.

A week goes by. Perhaps two weeks go by. I don't refer back to it, let alone answer it.

Allowing for this much time, you have either 1) forgotten about the question entirely, because you figured you'd eventually get the answer from me; 2) crunched quite hard and found the answer yourself, but are waiting for me to verify in a post that your answer is indeed correct, or: 3) you have crunched quite hard and found the answer yourself, have checked your answer in several ways, and have confidence that you are correct -- you are waiting for the challenge to be posed by the next question, and you will aggressively and confidently find and validate (or verify) your answer to your own satisfaction through your own creativity and initiative.

Choice "3" is my objective for you, as it is for myself. Building the ability to be resourceful and find your own answers (like a scavenger hunt, in a way) is a great deal of what Braintenance is about. The other part -- verifying an answer to your own satisfaction, and building your self-confidence as well as your resourcefulness -- that's the rest of it.

My wish and my goal for each and all of you is to build your own resourcefulness (i.e., your problem-solving and research skills), and to build your confidence in the answers which you have arrived at through your own ingenuity.

Perhaps that is my answer to your unasked question.

Sometimes I'll post answers, and sometimes I won't. But I will always keep you on your toes.

And I am committed to making the world a smarter place, one enlightened mind at a time.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
