Knowledge Can Make You Rich

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Knowledge Can Make You Rich
But Only If You Are Intelligent Enough To Apply It;
And Even Then, Only If You Are Motivated To Use Your Intelligence.

But you must first understand and acknowledge what knowledge actually is. According to Wikipedia:

“Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness or understanding of someone or something, such as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is acquired through experience or education by perceiving, discovering, or learning. Knowledge can refer to a theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. It can be implicit (as with practical skill or expertise) or explicit (as with the theoretical understanding of a subject); it can be more or less formal or systematic.[1] In philosophy, the study of knowledge is called epistemology; the philosopher Plato famously defined knowledge as "justified true belief", though "well-justified true belief" is more complete as it accounts for the Gettier problems. However, several definitions of knowledge and theories to explain it exist.
Knowledge acquisition involves complex cognitive processes: perception, communication, and reasoning; while knowledge is also said to be related to the capacity of acknowledgment in human beings.[2]”
Intelligence (as this term is used in describing intellectual processes and processing, and as it is distinctly differentiated from “knowledge”), while its precise definition is the subject of much spirited debate, has to do with the ability to utilize knowledge to solve a problem or achieve an objective. If your intelligence is not utilized, it may well be the most costly mistake of your life. If it [intelligence] is applied to an increasing body of acquired knowledge, you can truly become as rich or as successful as you please.

Motivation is the drive to use this ability called “intelligence” in order to solve a problem, or in order to achieve an objective.

To put the whole picture together in the form of a rudimentary equation:

KNOWLEDGE + INTELLIGENCE + MOTIVATION = SUCCESS

Take a quick break from following the U.S. Mid-Term Elections (this post is dated November 2nd 2014) and please have a look at these free to subscribe e-newspapers, edited by Douglas E. Castle. We've scraped the web for the best news and commentary from the most reliable and authoritative sources available (wire services, newspapers, magazines, scholarly works, blogs and social media), and compiled it for you to either skim rapidly or to read in detail at your leisure. Be the smartest, best-informed person in any room or in attendance at any meeting [then again, don't act overly cocky or you're liable to incur the wrath of your colleagues, business associates and friends – Remember: nobody likes a smart***]. Average is typical. Intelligent and informed are exceptional. Which would you prefer to be? Do you resent rhetorical questions? Anyway, the underlined words and titles are hyperlinked for your clicking pleasure:

Need I say more? While this looks like brazen, shameless self-promotion [and I'm not saying that it isn't], the information in this e-newspaper relates to various crucial aspects of entrepreneurial projects as well as small- to medium-sized businesses. The information varies from day to day, but it covers the fields of finance, management, marketing, accounting, regulation, best practices, technology and trends, in both the B2B and B2C environments. But then I've already said too much...

=> A new issue of The Undercurrent =>|<= is out!
Great news, commentary and trend reports about industrial intelligence, executive protection, data security, workplace safety and a host of other intriguing things happening behind the scenes in business.

=> A new issue of World Disruption And Commentary is out!
This is possibly the country's best compilation of news, commentary and trends [possibly a slight exaggeration] about industry, product and technological disruption and disruptors, covering new births as well as extinctions, both at present [in real-time] and as projected. Disruption and displacement will be the death knell for some products, companies, industries and investments, but will present profitable arbitrage opportunities for those who are in the know and act on these insights.

We frequently need to de-stress, relax, clear our minds of chaotic debris, gain a fresh perspective and regain a fresh, energized creative perspective. Each of us needs a clean refresh and full emotional and psychological reset to be at his or her best If you are a follower or reader of The Braintenance Blog, I would suggest you bookmark this page, because you're going to use this meditation recording at least three times a day - and if your need it, perhaps a fourth or fifth time.

The recording takes less than 10 minutes each time, but its effects are amazing -- and you can listen to it without headphones, antennae or an aluminum foil hat in the quiet of your home or office.Consider it to be a quick sanity kit.

Rid your weary mind of burdensome anxiety or the fugue state induced by the upcoming year-end audit, guessing at your bonus, pre-holiday Christmas gift panic, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Return-That-Junk Tuesday [a Lingovation], the blues, the blahs, the feeling of seasonal pressure. Reclaim your life and your joy by using this nifty meditation tape.

The optimal times to listen to this brief but powerful "rewing your mind" tape are right before bedtime (when your mind is drifting off toward pre-sleep -- the hypnogogic susceptible state), as soon as you wake up in the morning (when your mind is in a suggestive hypnopompic state) at lunchtime, before youve eaten, and any other time when you are beginning to feel frustrated and you mind is "heating up" and rebelling against you...you know -- when facts become more elusive and problem-solving stops becoming a challenge and starts becoming emotionally and intellectually paralytic.

Enjoy this tape as often as you like: And remember, favorite this page and post this whole darn article to all of your social media sites.

Incidentally, it is also excellent to play before important meetings, presentations and even negotiations. The download link follows. Start using this meditative reset today.

Castle's Second Law Of Practical Risk Assessment - Conceptual Thinking.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Castle's Second Law Of Practical Risk Assessment*:

Business Planners and Project Managers, as well as their affiliated teams should note that "in many cases, the same given risk factors in implementing a new technological tool or 'solution' weigh much more heavily against the benefit factors in a larger, more 'multi-cellular' organization than in its smaller, less-evolved counterpart."

Or, looked at in a different way...

* Sometimes referred to alternatively as Castle's Second Law Of Practical Risk Management or Castle's Second Law Of Practical Risk Evaluation

Braintenance Battalions:

Dear colleagues, friends, readers, followers and curiosity seekers, you expand the scope of virtually every aspect of your intellect, creative ability, visualization powers and neuronal plasticity when you think intensely about a concept. Concepts, especially those which cause you to think of a tremendous number of examples, and to compare and contrast many variables simply make you smarter.

Pondering them distracts you from thinking about the more mundane but unpleasant challenges which face you and allow your mind to unwind.

The above concept (my Second Law), a study in conceit and eponymous versus anonymous publication, is one mentioned in a article which I published in a blog about business and project planning and management.

Ponder this conundrum:

In a situation (in implementing a new technology, for example) where the identified risk factors are exactly the same for two companies, the relative benefits tend to outweigh the relative costs (risk of loss) for the smaller, less complicated company.

1) Why would this be the case?

2) Can you cite some examples?

3)  Do you think that bigger organizations in general (notwithstanding my ridiculous Law) have more to lose than much smaller organizations? And justify your answer logically, philosophically, and Humanistically... might those three different criteria [analysis variables] give you some feelings of conflict?

*Actually, any conflicts between judgment criteria when evaluating a concept further expand the realm and scope of the mind and its miraculous capabilities.

When trying to align these judgment criteria variables, your mind must do a great deal of work; and sometimes, looking at the concept with respect to one variable might lead you to a conclusion which conflicts irreconcilably with that which would apply with respect to another.

This is akin to a type of paradox, and is often the cause for either elimination of some test variables (look at some of the major drug company studies, for example), rationalization, or a bit of an unsettled schizophrenia-like intellectual or even emotional dilemma.

Conceptual Thinking is not for the faint of heart.

Your Creative Orientation: Negative? Positive?

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Creativity is one of the greatest attributes of the Human mind that leads to almost all significant adaptations and advancements. Every product, service, or system is given the first seeds of its existence, its first chance at life, by the creative energy of thought. Metaphorically, the very energy of brain is converted, through a process, into a tangible, physical result -- truly an Einsteinian conversion of energy to matter.

Being innovative is not quite enough. Your Creative Orientation is a major factor in what the outcome of your thoughts will be. By way of example, if your creative process is started based upon a negative premise ("We have a problem which must be solved.") instead of upon a positive premise ("I have a vision for a goal which I long to achieve.") your creative capacity, imaginative scope, and ultimate results are likely to be negatively impacted and limited.

You see, the idea-generation process is immediately constrained by an obsessive focus on problem-solving. This tends to lead to narrower, more introspective, less "outside of the box" parametrized type of thought organization. The very premise which directs your energy is that you "must work to solve a problem." This is inhibiting.

If you commence the creative process with a vision or a dream  -- it represents (subconsciously) a creative opportunity with much broader parametric bounds, and a great deal more free-flowing and associative thought.

The secret to building and sustaining a positive creative orientation is to "fool the mind" into seeing problem-solving obligations as as constructive, forward-thinking challenges. If you are successfully able to condition you thought process to viewing any problems as invitations to innovate, you will free your mind to do its highest and best energy work -- because your mind sees this as a means of challenging, creative expression, and not as "work" or a "task' .

Again, a part of Braintenance has to do with be aware of what and how you are thinking, and to change the process as necessary.

Pi: A magical number (and easier to say than "Phi")

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

The number Pi is a mathematical constant. It represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. If you divide the circumference of any circle (or perfectly-formed, hand-tossed pizza) by its diameter (the measure of a straight line cutting the pizza in half), you will get Pi, which is equal to 22/7, or approximately 3.14. Now let's review Fabian's quandary, from a couple of days ago...

Background:

Fabian Focaccia (not his real name, which is Sal Monella)  is a struggling 'artist' who is working at a neighborhood pizzeria in Brooklyn, New York (not his real location, as he is in the Federal Witness Protection Program, but which is still the best geographical location to make a pizza purchase if you/ youse should ever get around to it) to pay his bills until he can sell one of his paintings. He is faced with a decision and needs your help. He has cardboard boxes for 'take out' pizza (this pizza parlor does a big take-out business -- even for Arizona...oops!) which are each three inches deep (irrelevant for solving this problem) and measure exactly 20 inches by 20 inches square.

The Pizza Box Puzzle (In Two Parts):

1) What is the circumference of the largest pizza (assume that it is hand-tossed and perfectly round) which can be placed in the box neatly, i.e., placing it flat without stuffing it in and distorting its perfect shape?

Answer: This is really just a circle inscribed in a square. Here's a picture:

As you can see, the diameter of the pizza must  be exactly 20" for it to fit snugly in the box. If that's the case, then the pizza would have a circumference equal to Pi times the diameter, or approximately 62.8".

and,

2) What is the circumference of the largest individual pie (out of two) which can be placed in the box if two pies of equal size are placed in a cardboard container of the same dimensions as in number 1, above?

Answer: This is very similar to the first question. But this time you've got to put two equally-sized pies in the box without mutilating them. Here's a picture:

The two pies, side by side, can still not have combined diameters greater than the 20" length of the box (some of you were going to try doing this using the hypotenuse obtained by cutting the box into two right triangles, but that doesn't work - ha!). Each of the two pies will have a diameter of 10", and each will have a corresponding circumference of 31.4".

BCNU soon.

Pizza, Pi and Packaging.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Your mind is a muscle. You must use it to strengthen it. If you don't, it will atrophy and hasten your descent toward dementia (which is not the name of a town in the Midwestern USA). Following are a pair of practical problems involving Pizza, Pi and Packaging. Try 'em.

1) What is the circumference of the largest pizza (assume that it is hand-tossed and perfectly round) which can be placed in the box neatly, i.e., placing it flat without stuffing it in and distorting its perfect shape? and,

2) What is the circumference of the largest individual pie (out of two) which can be placed in the box if two pies of equal size are placed in a cardboard container of the same dimensions as in number 1, above?

Knowing the geometric properties of circles, triangles and squares certainly does come in handy when it comes to practical everyday matters. This is high-utility knowledge, and sometimes a great deal of dough may be at stake. [cue groaning].
