The Unanswered Question*

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Braintenance: The Unanswered Question*

Dear Fellow (and Lady) Cerebral Celebrants:

I have done it more than once. Here is the typical scenario:

I  post a question to which I have requested an answer from you.

A week goes by. Perhaps two weeks go by. I don't refer back to it, let alone answer it.

Allowing for this much time, you have either 1) forgotten about the question entirely, because you figured you'd eventually get the answer from me; 2) crunched quite hard and found the answer yourself, but are waiting for me to verify in a post that your answer is indeed correct, or: 3) you have crunched quite hard and found the answer yourself, have checked your answer in several ways, and have confidence that you are correct -- you are waiting for the challenge to be posed by the next question, and you will aggressively and confidently find and validate (or verify) your answer to your own satisfaction through your own creativity and initiative.

Choice "3" is my objective for you, as it is for myself. Building the ability to be resourceful and find your own answers (like a scavenger hunt, in a way) is a great deal of what Braintenance is about. The other part -- verifying an answer to your own satisfaction, and building your self-confidence as well as your resourcefulness -- that's the rest of it.

My wish and my goal for each and all of you is to build your own resourcefulness (i.e., your problem-solving and research skills), and to build your confidence in the answers which you have arrived at through your own ingenuity.

Perhaps that is my answer to your unasked question.

Sometimes I'll post answers, and sometimes I won't. But I will always keep you on your toes.

And I am committed to making the world a smarter place, one enlightened mind at a time.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Mom's Paradoxes - They Confuse Otherwise Reasonable Children.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Cranial Celebrants:

Following is a sampling of thought-provoking, yet highly-confusing paradoxes moms were assaulting their children with in the 1960's:

"How could you be so thoughtless?" "What were you thinking, anyway?"

"Thank God you're alright! I oughta kill ya..."

"You broke your new toy? There! Are you happy now? Well?"

The end result: A generation in therapy.

"Are You Running TOWARD Something, or RUNNING AWAY FROM Something?" - Douglas Castle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

"Are You Running TOWARD Something, or RUNNING AWAY FROM Something?" - Douglas Castle

Dear Readers:

The question would seem to be a very simple one, and indeed it is. Its answer, whatever that may be for any of us, determines 1) what direction our journey will take; 2) where we will end up, and 3) what type of experience we will have along the way.

If we visualized that the things we fear were very much like one "gravitational force," and the things that we desire to acquire are just like the other, competitive "gravitational force," we would soon stumble upon the conclusion that our lives' trajectories, velocities and destinations will be shaped by the conflicts and relative strengths of these two gravitational bodies that each lie at some distance from us.

My suspicion is that running toward something tends to make for more of a deliberate journey, where we have significant say in the flight plan, whereas a life lived running or hiding from something tends to be as erratic as it is frenetic.

Do some Braintenance...exercise your introspection and do some reverse engineering. If you are brutally honest with yourself, you can find out why you are where you are, and why you are headed where you are headed.

Perhaps the mere recognition of these motivational forces in our lives might allow us to better live each day. And life is the sum (or perhaps the product) of all of our days.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Connecting: Some Questions to Ask Yourself...Seriously

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Connecting: Some Questions to Ask Yourself...Seriously

Dear Friends:

All other things being equal, and without reading into the questions (simple choices, actually), which of these two alternatives would you prefer in each of the cases below:

FIRST
1. Free social media access to all platforms and free passes to large group networking events, or;
2. Personal third-party introductions (with endorsements) to five pre-qualified, motivated prospective clients or partners per month at a fee of $50/month to $150/month?

SECOND
1. An email subscriber list of 100,000 people (acquired for free), or;
2. A group of 5 individuals who knew you, your product, and were aggressively talking to people to pre-qualify prospective clients to refer to you at a fee of $50/month to $150/month (total) plus a small commission on each closed sale?

THIRD
1. Spending time on the telephone and in virtual or actual meetings with prospective clients, or;
2. Spending time on the internet and working with your social media, with vigorous postings and email correspondence?

FOURTH
1. Spending time exploring and implementing cost-saving measures, or;
2. Spending time exploring and implementing revenue-generating measures?

FIFTH
1. Being the most well-regarded and liked person among your network of contacts, or;
2. Being the person among your contacts who has the most needed product or service?

Please put all of your choices (anonymously) on the form which follows as soon as you can, and then hit the SEND button. No explanations, rationalizations, qualifications or excuses are permitted. Be decisive, without hedging or apologies. There are five questions, and the answer to each one is either 1 or 2.

Please click HERE for a pop-up form.

Thank you for your time, consideration, input and honesty. Anonymous statistical results and their possible implications will be posted shortly. We'll keep you posted.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Braintenance - Solving Thorny Problems

Reminder: Deadline EXTENDED to 4/22 on Self-Evaluation Survey! Job 1 = Know Yourself. Job 2 = Participate. Click on http://bit.ly/Introspect6

Braintenance: Solving Thorny Problems.

Dear Friends:

It is, as my musician friends would say, a simple fact: We are each, at one time or another, posed with a wicked question which demands an answer -- and we stand there, clueless. Or, if we are like my ex-girlfriend's dad, a preeminent "petroleum transportation engineer" at a local filling station, we say, "You'll never learn unless you look it up yourself."

That latter comment is truly wisdom; albeit said in the expediency of the moment in order to get rid of a pesky kid who really wanted an answer that petro-papa was too proud to admit that he could not provide.

The exercises which follow will build your mental muscle (a sort of "cranial crunches"). And I'll give you a week to answer them. Don't just tell me how you'd look -- give me the answer to prove to me that your advice is valid. You can do it! [By the way, this is a DIY post, so the answer "ask someone who might know," is not permitted]

1. You've heard a new word. You do not know how to spell it, but you must find out what it means. How?

2. You need to know the most common side effects of a chemical -- ephedra. How?

3. You need to know about the reputation amongst consumers, about a 2009 Lexus SUV before you purchase one.

4. Your 10 year old son was just stung on the ankle by several nasty yellowjackets. Wht must you immediately do?

5. You see this mystery molecule (a picture) and are asked what commonly -prescribed medication it represents:

6. You are asked to name the lady or gentleman to whom the phrase, "Do not ask for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." How?

7. You are asked to interpret the following mystery barcode. You haven't access to a scanner.How?

Good luck, fellow brain-blasters.

Faithfully,

Douglas

Commentary: Take an anonymous survey to find out more about who you truly are; your affinities and dislikes; your strengths and weaknesses; your personal and professional style; your areas of greatest potential. Self-evaluation is one of the most powerful success tools available, yet so few of us take advantage of it's enormous, transformative, revelatory potential. We must study who we are within to be able to address the world outside of us, and to interrelate with others. -- Douglas Castle [ http://aboutdouglascastle.blogspot.com/ ].

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Prevention and Treatment of High Blood Pressure - Various Conventional and Alternative Approaches

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Prevention and Treatment of High Blood Pressure - Various Conventional and Alternative Approaches.

Note: This article is does not offer medical, health or fitness advice, and is provided for acadmentic and interest purposes only. All information is made availab elt o you for you consideration in conjunction with the advice of your healthcare professional. This article was written by Douglas Castle http://aboutDouglascastle.blogspot.com  (Featured Columnist for the National Networker Weekly Newsletter) and the author of The Global Futurist and a host of other publications, media and blogs.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is  a condition which can rapidly develop and actually cause death with a minimum of telltale symptoms. Hypertension is becoming increasingly common, incresingly severe, and is invariably diagnosed and treated. It can be caused by emotional stress, physical stess, poor diet, a lack of exercise, overweight and genetic factors. Ahough it might not preventable, it can be kept under control.

According to the American Heart Association nearly 1/3 of the adults (people over 18) have high blood pressure but nearly 1/3 of those don't know they are sick. This is because high blood pressure is a silent killer, with little to no symptoms.

Current guidelines for blood pressure are: normal is below 120/80, prehypertension is between 120/80 and 139/89 and hypertension is 140/80 or greater. A further distinction is made for those who have blood pressure greater than 160/100 as stage 2 hypertension.
Although doctors can't identify a definitive cause in 95% of people diagnosed with hypertension, they do know there are some lifestyle choices that can be modified and which will cause a decrease in the measurements. These lifestyle modifications are the first in a line of alternative treatments for hypertension. The first lifestyle choice is weight. The greater the body mass the more pressure exerted on the arterial walls and more oxygen that is required to feed the tissues of the body. By reducing your weight to normal limits you'll be able to effect a significant change in your blood pressure.

Some of the basics follow:
1. minimize your salt (and sodium) intake;
2. drink plendy of water and dilute fruit juices;
3. reduce caffeine intake;
4. avoid excessive use of decongenstant or stimulant formulas;
5. maintain a healthy, light bodyweight;
6. meditate and de-stress as often as possible;
7. get constant cardio-vascular exercise;
8. Take time to breathe slowly, deeply and deliberately;
9  Use positive mental visualization to the greatest extent possible;
10.See your health care provider frequently in order to monitor your pressure - You may also be helped with prescription drugs

Some Alternative Therapies and Substances which may indeed be worth your investigation:
1. Take significant effective doses of L-Arginine, a natural amino acid which helps to increase the amount of Nitric Oxide in the Bloodstream;
2. Take reasonable does of Foic Acid along with vitamin B12 (this combination reduces blood homosysteine as well);
3. Take reasonable amounts of Hawthorne supplements;
4. Taking garlic in a small medicinal dose is thought to be helpful in aiding arterial and veinous health;
5. Taking small amounts of flush-free Niacin is a cholesterol clearing agent, and a de facto widener of the arteries as plaque is kept from forming;
6. Taking small amounts of Coenzyme Q10 might also have a favorable effect on vessel wall health, plasticity and longevity.

Braintenance: Tom Swifties! - Guaranteed to make you grown.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Tom Swifties! - Guaranteed to make you grown.
Dear Friends:
Tom Swifties are absurd and ridiculous puns based upon a liberal abuse of homonyms. Yet, they are indeed a wonderfully creative art form. It is a challenge to construct them, and a joyous braintenance exercise to read through them and find just how far the English language can be contorted by creative minds in the interest of producing statements that, on the surface, seem to make sense, but upon further inspection, are truly absurd. Ironically, both constructing and reading through Tom Swifties are vocabulary builders, and enhancers of our innate ability to see the relationships between words. The free association potential (one of the critical components of genuine intelligence) is invigorated by investing some time in Tom Swifties.
Some examples come to mind:
"I'm absolutely not a necrophiliac," Tom said half in dead earnest.
"What would like on your pancakes?" the waitress asked Tom syruptitiously .
Here is a collection of some others which you'll genuinely enjoy, courtesy of http://thinks.com/words/tomswift.htm:
  • "Have you ever been whitewater rafting?" Tom asked rapidly. (*2)
  • "What are these berries?" Tom rasped.
  • "I'm embarrassed," Tom admitted readily.
  • "I can see naturally," Tom realized.
  • "There it is again!" Tom recited.
  • "I've never had an accident," said Tom recklessly.
  • """Said Tom recursively," said Tom recursively," said Tom recursively" said Tom recursively.
  • "Nice looking glass!" said Tom reflectively.
  • "It's time for the second funeral," Tom rehearsed.
  • "I've gone back to my wife," was Tom's rejoinder.
  • "Superglue!" Tom rejoined.
  • "We did it twice last night," she relayed.
  • "OK, you can borrow it again," Tom relented.
  • "I've transferred my money back into my German savings account," Tom remarked with interest.
  • "I've passed the exam this time," Tom remarked.
  • "That is remarkable," remarked Tom.
  • "I've paid my annual subscription," Tom remembered.
  • "I've gone back to using my maiden name", said Mary remissly.
  • "I'd better repeat that SOS message," said Tom remorsefully.
  • "My garden needs another layer of mulch," Tom repeated.
  • "I'm taking this ship back into harbor," Tom reported.
  • "Must I show again why this is true?" asked Tom reprovingly.
  • "I mailed it to you again," Tom said resentfully. (*2)
  • "I suppose I'll have to write my name again." said Tom resignedly.
  • "I'm not a crook," Nixon said resignedly. (*2)
  • "It's a piece of laboratory equipment," Tom retorted.
  • "My oar is broken," said Tom robustly.
  • "Balls!" Tom said roundly.
  • "I can't eat any more of this bitter herb," said Tom ruefully.
  • "What's the name of that street in Paris?" asked Tom ruefully. (*2)
  • "I've an urgent appointment," said Tom in Russian.
  • "I need a home run hitter," Tom said ruthlessly. (*2)
  • "This fowl has been stuffed," said Tom sagely.
  • "Bring me a large helping of vanilla with chocolate sauce," I screamed.
  • "So only one person arrived at the party before I did?" Tom second-guessed.
  • "I'll use my stopwatch to see how fast it moves," said Tom, seconding the motion.
  • "I won't tell you anything about my salivary glands," said Tom secretively.
  • "Would you like to buy an alarm?" asked Tom self-righteously.
  • "Would you like to buy some cod?" asked Tom selfishly.
  • "You lamb!" said Tom sheepishly.
  • "Ought I to do this?" asked Tom with a shudder.
  • "I'm going to end it all," Sue sighed.
  • "This looks like the fruit of the blackthorn," said Tom slowly.
  • "What are you taking pictures of?" Tom snapped.
  • "I'll do your conveyancing, but I'll be slow and overcharge you," said Tom solicitously.
  • "Rod sure is a spoiled little child," Tom said sparely. (*2)
  • "One of the tires just blew out," Tom said sparingly. (*2)
  • "This ocean is calm," said the sailors specifically. (*2)
  • "The optician probably doesn't have my glasses ready yet," Tom speculated.
  • "Save the whales," spouted Tom. (*2)
  • "You don't see the point, do you?" asked Tom, making a stab in the dark.
  • "Hey, you're standing on my foot!" said Tom standoffishly.
  • "What's this black stain round my mouth?" asked Tom succinctly.
  • "This tuna is excellent," said Tom superficially.
  • "Yes, I have read Gulliver's Travels," said Tom swiftly.
  • "Please don't sneeze with your mouth full, said Tom to the carpet-layer tactfully.
  • "I'm simply not a nice girl," she whispered tartly. (*2)
  • "I work at a bank," said Tom tellingly.
  • "My bid for this contract aims to please," said Tom tenderly.
  • "I have no idea," said Tom thoughtlessly.
  • "Parsley, sage, rosemary," said Tom timelessly.
  • "You shouldn't be writing elegies, young lady," the curfew told Nell.
  • "I'm going to fix the roof," Tom translated.
  • "I was adopted," said Tom transparently.
  • "I punched him in the stomach three times," said Tom triumphantly.
I hope that you have enjoyed this departure from proper use of the English language.
Faithfully,
Douglas Castle

Sloganizing or Sloganeering - Creating Sharp Objects That Penetrate

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

A curious new Lingovation, or two, with a small bit of input reqested of you.

Given: Slogans, in marketing, are, in essence, sharp objects that penetrate.

Choose: Would you call the professional creation of high-quality slogans "sloganizing" or "sloganeering"? I suspect that either one is good. But some of the more etymologically and connotatively astute among you have pointed out to me that the suffix "-izing" has to do with an act of creation or change, while the suffix "-eering" has more to do with study, discovery or adventure.

Please advise me, oh enlightened and caring ones,  as to which term is better suited for what the amazing Rhonda Sher does? You may cast your ballot in the little box at the bottom of this post which says "Contact Douglas Castle." Do I ask because I respect the opinion of my readers? YES! Do I also ask because I can get some free market research in this manner? YES!

Please read that which follows...

Slogans - Sharp Objects That Penetrate.

Your Challenge: You have less than 5 seconds and no more than 140 characters. You are surrounded by noise, spam and information competing for your audience's attention. Make your point. Can you? How?

The Solution: A lethal, memorable catchphrase that 1) attracts attention through clever wording, humor, controversy, curiousity-building a call to action or fear, and 2) states what you or your company actually does.

The Reward: Branding, buzz, credibility, SEO and revenues.

The Means: Rhonda L. Sher, one of our newest Members of The National Networker Companies (a GICBC) doesn't call herself what she is, but she does exactly what we are talking about...my term (a lingovation) for Rhona's area of expertise, framed as a profession is "SLOGANIZING" (or perhaps "SLOGANEERING"). Given the narrow parameters of communication in this ever-declining signal-to-noise ratio environment, her area of specialization is becoming increasingly crucial.

You must SLOGANIZE or SLOGANEER to succeed. Your path is simple...

1. Sloganize (or Sloganeer);

2. Buzz;

3. Brand Yourself.

Before I lead you into a re-post of my most recent TNNW article brief about Rhonda, I am obligated, by Adam Kovitz, to tell you to join us at TNNWC (for free) to receive our free publications, and to gain access to our fabulous services and Global Interworked Cooperative Business Community. Click on http://bit.ly/JoinTNNW.

Now I have to use my vast powers of pursuasion to convince Rhonda to make her uniqely powerful area of specialization available to our Members.

What follows is re-post of what the magic of this Sloganizing (or Sloganeering) is all about.

Think about the sheer rallying power inherent phrases like "Yes We Can," "Not On My Watch," "Just Say No," "Mikey Likes It!" "Shock and Awe", "Are You Man Enough?" "Save The Children, " "Protecting Your Rights," "The Quiet Company, "Capture Those Moments," "I Keep My Neighbors Safe," To Serve and To Protect"... There is intense and immense power in well-chosen words...

Dear Friends:

Silly slogans are not fully silly. They tend to be memorable. Creating catchphrases, one-liners, blurbs, campaign (or even military operations) titles, bylines, credos and slogans requires a tremendous skill -- getting the maximimum  meaning and memorability out of the minimal number of words.

You must be a poet, a wordsmith, a humorist, a behavioral psychologist -- or you must be Rhonda L. Sher, of the Two Minute Networker (http://thetwominutenetworker.com/).

Ms. Sher is a noted author and an expert in high-speed, maximum efficiency networking, but her greatest magic lies in her ability to create fabulously catchy slogans. Every person, every company and every cause-based organization needs one. You can either visit Rhonda' websites, or you can contact her either a) by email at Rhonda@twominutenetworker.com , or by telephone at 951.587.6512. One thing is certain - Rhonda not only excels at what she does, but she has fun doing it. She is a true joy to invest time with.

By the way, this endorsement was unsolicited and is uncompensated. It's simply because I, and my esteemed colleagues at The National Networker Companies (join us at no cost by clicking on http://bit.ly/JoinTNNW) , want to be certain that all of our members and readers are constantly kept apprised of any person, company, product or service which may help them in their quest for growth.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

p.s. Here's one from me: "Don't Compete... Collaborate!"

p.p.s I couldn't resist this. Neither will you. So predictable. Heck... Enjoy it.

Permutations and Combinations - The Answers!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Here are the answers (long-awaited) for the questions posed las week which involve permutations and combinations:

1. In a group of ten individuals, how many pairings are possible?

Based upon the formula (you might want to roll back a few posts to find it), the answer is 10!/(10! - 2!)(2!), which equals 10 x 9 /2 which equals 45 possible pairings.

2. In a group of ten individuals, how many combinations of 3 individuals each are possible?

Using the same formula as above, the answer is 10 x 9 x 8 / 3, which equals 168 possible combinations of 3 each.

3. In a group of ten individuals, how many combinations of 2 or 3 individuals are possible?

The key word is "or." Merely add the answer to question 1 to the answer to question 2, or simply add 45 + 168, which equals 213 possible combinations of either 2 or 3 each.

4. Five paintings are to be arranged in a row on a wall. How many different arrangements are possible?

Using the permutation formula, the answer can be found by multiplying 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1, which will equal 120 possible arrangements.

5. Same facts as in question 4, above: How many different arrangements are possible where two paintings by one particular artist must be side by side?

If one artist produced two fo the paintings, and he or she would like both of those paintings displayed side by side, we will have less than 120 possible arrangements. There are several arrangements possible where two paintings MUST be side by side:

1 x 1 x 3 x 2 x 1 =  6 arrangements

3 x 1 x 1 x 2 x 1 =  6 arrangements

3 x 2 x 1 x 1 x 1 =  6 arrangements

3 x 2 x 1 x 1 x 1 =  6 arrangements

In all, there are 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 total arrangements, or a total of 34 possible arrangements where the demanding artist will have his or her two works hanging side by side.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
