Memorization Exercises To Boost Brainpower -- Braintenance -- Douglas E. Castle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Memorizing and being able to repeat certain types of sentences does more than build up your facility for rote memorization. The improvement in simple recall is actually the least of it! Memorizing the sentences which follow will strengthen your ability to visualize, organize and to think creatively. Memorize each of the seven sentences (or groups of sentences) which follow, one at a time. Then recite each one aloud several times. Get smarter, make more associative connections and have a bit of neural plasticity on the house! Ahoy, Braintenancers:

1) Let me repeat your order. You bought twenty apples, thirty oranges and fifteen bananas which you paid for using your Discover Card.

2) The parties agree that due to the many variables surrounding each business transaction that will occur because of this agreement, the commission to be paid between the parties may vary.

3) Contrarians don't generally agree with veterinarians who refuse to treat planarians with microscopic plantar warts.

4) She ran into the bathroom, slipped on the wet floor and fell downward, hitting her head on the side of the porcelain bathtub.

5) Can you tell me where the coffee cans can be hidden? Are they beneath the begonias in Mr. Brighton's flower bed?

6) He longed for lodging near the lakeside lounge area where his paramour was enjoying her pajama-clad paradise and pretending that those about her were not staring.

7) Two times seven equals fourteen, but if you add an additional six to the mix the total sum will soon become twenty, and as if that weren't plenty, if you multiply by three the result will be sixty.

Good luck with these, my fellow (and lady) Brainiacs. Do these Braintenance exercises and feel your cranial vault crawling with newly-inspired activity.

As always, thank you for reading me.

Top 10 Formulas That Changed The World!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

While doing some casual research, I came across a wonderful article and video about the ten most significant formulas (derived from mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry and a variety of other frequently disruptive and often controversial academic fields) discovered since the beginning of time. I enjoy all of these disciplines, and have a great amount of respect for those for work at them, whether from a theoretical standpoint or from an application standpoint..

First, we have an embedded video player (which frequently fails to appear due to Murphy's Law, which was my late father's favorite -- the funny thing about this law is that it is interactive, and as such cannot be defeated -- for example, if I get onto a line at the supermarket that seems shorter, it will become longer than the other line that I would have chosen; or if I drop buttered toast on the carpet, it will invariably fall with the buttered side down):

The other interesting thing about Murphy's Law, which is often quoted as "If anything can go wrong it will, and at the worst possible time, yielding the greatest damage or inconvenience. It's different that the laws expressed in the ten formulas because it actually addresses, in a most pessimistic manner, the way we interact with the Universe.

Then we have a link to the original article: http://video.answers.com/top-10-mathematical-equations-that-changed-the-world-517505208

Wildly enough. I unearthed this gem of an article on Ask.Com while on a completely unrelated search.

If you'd like to go on a fabulous mind excursion, just look up any item on one of the search engines, arbitrarily click on some link and see where it leads you. Those of us in Braintenance, have a tremendous appreciation for this random yet often serendipitous stream-of-conscious rambling activity because it is unfocused, not fully controlled (consciously) by us, and because it often takes on a very important tangent leading us to something which we find utterly fascinating.

If you read The Braintenance Blog, you'll know that I believe that a foray into the wilderness of irrelevance (i.e., something like the 'rabbit hole' stream-of-consciousness search engine adventure described in the preceding paragraph) often creates new interests, and therefore increases and broadens the scope of things which we consider relevant from that moment on.

I've referred to it as "The Virtue Of Irrelevancy" - it is a wonderful counterbalance to obsessive focus and elusive answers, and a way to increase your knowledge base and ability to associate.

By the way, please remember to read an older article which I recently posted:

Trick Your Mind Into Expanding! - Braintenance (braintenance.blogspot.com)

The suggested exercise (in the above article) requires a great deal of time, but it is well worth the beneficial effects on consciousness, cognition and neuronal plasticity.

Briefly going back to those 10 revolutionary formulas which we opened this article with, it is important to note that every one of them has an inherent ability to benefit us as well as the inherent ability to destroy us, or some aspect of our civilization. Whether an object is a tool (to build or heal) or a weapon (to destroy or injure) is fully dependent upon the intentions and abilities of the individual who wields it.

As I've said before, let's avoid confusing cause and effect when we are beset by bullying or violence. I can build a house with this brick, or I can throw it at some unfortunate person and cause him or her a concussion. The responsibility resides with me, not with the inanimate brick. Carrying this just a bit further, the person whom I clobbered could have been a terrorist, planning to bomb a packed shopping mall, or a person who was otherwise headed on a course to win a Nobel Peace Prize.

We Humans never fully know the power that we wield over the future.

Enjoy the 10 Formulas That Changed The World not only for what they describe, but for what their potentials are, each one separately, for construction or destruction.

Thank you for reading me me and for sharing my thoughts with your social media networks.

We Learn Viscerally And Mentally

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

If you were to ask everyone whom you chanced to encounter if the following two statements were true, you would mostly get answers in the affirmative. And yet, despite conventional wisdom, they are only partial truths:

1. The MIND is the seat of intelligence and learning, and,
2. The MIND controls the BODY.

-- Just ask any ordinary person. He or she will likely confirm it (and perhaps even grin gratuitously).

One would think that our bodies were robotic; that they are merely slaves to our minds. When meeting a challenge (i.e., running a race, lifting weights, making a presentation in front of a group, somebody's well-intended uncle invariably chimes in with, "You can do it, kid! It's just mind over matter!"

If that were completely true (and I'll confess that I believe it to be partially true),   then how is it possible that:  Physical pain profoundly affects how we think and feel?  We can walk down a familiar flight of stairs with our eyes closed? We can sense the gaze or presence of another individual upon us or in our proximity?  An electrical current can produce a spasm when passed through a physically dead body?  An individual will involuntarily vomit to purge a poison from his system, even if tastes delicious, and even if he has been told by his trusted spouse that it is quite healthful? When my body is cold, I begin to shiver? A victim in a deep coma may physically respond to the touch of a loved one?  Someone can study a piano book for a year, and, when invited to sit down and play, absolutely be at a loss? People often sleepwalk without hurting themselves? A ballerina can execute a series of thousands of moves during the course of a ballet? An accomplished martial artist can perform a series of  moves in the same manner as a ballerina? Muscle fibers can grow stronger as a result of mere physical exercise? We have many spontaneous reflexes? Our bodies can heal themselves when cut or bruised?

And how about this...

That each and every cell in our bodies "knows" the role that it is obligated to play in order to sustain us? And that certain cells or tissues, if moved from one part of the body to another, can actually adapt and assume a new function???

Combined, out minds and bodies are like interactive holographs. Each cell contains the code necessary to re-create the entire body from which is was drawn, but each cell is 'willing' to a assume a specific role as determined by engineering and circumstances. And each cell has enough plasticity to "morph" into another type of cell to carry on a function which is not being addressed by some other injured or diseased cell.

I am most fascinated by scientific reports of patients who have had hearts and other vital organs donated to them through life-saving transplants, and who subsequently developed memories, or sensations or cravings that were known to be associated with the deceased donor -- a complete stranger.

Well then...

OUR BODIES LEARN, TOO. From cell, to organ, to system, to the whole being...OUR BODIES LEARN. Our cells and systems remember. Our cells and systems adapt to change, and can, if need be, actually transform themselves to survive the environment!

The seat of intelligence and learning is not exclusively in the MIND. The seat of intelligence and learning is not exclusively in the BODY. THE SEAT OF INTELLIGENCE AND LEARNING IS IN OUR ENTIRE BEING.

The infinite recursive interplay between mental (mind) learning and visceral (body) learning creates the means of realizing our greatest potential.  And I believe that that potential is unlimited.

Just relax and let yourself imagine the wildest of  possibilities for a moment:If MIND and BODY are both consciously trained and are taught to work in harmony, the result could be extraordinary synergy and unparalleled achievement.

Looked at in this way, we are not merely creatures -- we are cooperate, collaborative colonies of "blood" relations. Each cell learns. Each cell instructs or teaches its neighbors or the tissues in which it is subsumed. We are mental (conscious) and visceral (conscious and subconscious) collections of miniaturized minds, each one compacted, yet each, like a computer chip, loaded with information and a mysterious sentience.
