RUN YOUR CURSOR OVER THE IMAGE ABOVE TO STRETCH YOUR MIND FURTHER

Being Yourself - The Ultimate Challenge... A Paradoxical Puzzle. This incredibly strenuous introspective and reflective exercise requires a Braintenance Strain that will, if you'll allow it, elevate you to a new level of reasoning and a higher state of awareness and consciousness. We'll call it "The Paradox Of The Self Upon Reflection." It is a never-ending exercise which causes the essence of you as an unidentified, unattached, disembodied, ego-absent observer, to continually evolve. It is ultimately transcendental. It builds a newer power of intellect both analytically and emotionally.

Try to envision your mind (not your brain, but the electromagnetic, biochemical and mysterious "animator" which operates it at different levels to accomplish different things) as a fantastic machine which works at each or all of these settings in varying degrees:

1) The Unconscious Mind: This layer is purely for sustenance, is geared to the central nervous system and does not produce anything short of certain signals to certain part of the body to keep you alive. It does not create or ruminate - it is highly mechanical, and physically reflexive;

2) The Subconscious Mind: This layer is where all of your robotic programs and memories are stored, and it tends to fight with your conscious efforts to achieve things. L. Ron Hubbard (in a rare moment of genius) referred to it as the "reactive mind." It tends to remember failures and contradict your conscious efforts. It is like the mind of a child, and unless properly programmed, holds you a prisoner of your failures and disappointments of the past. In fact, it keeps you most comfortable repeating this undesirable but programmed shortcomings. It must be programmed constantly to keep your conscious goals and innermost desires within reach. It suppresses successes [rhyme time? Nein.] and causes most subtle but powerful emotional stresses. It is permanently childish, but has a giant capacity for full sensory memory;

3) The Conscious Mind: The component of mind that is thinking, working, deciding, reacting, and creates the world, or your perception of the world, which you carry with you. It let's you read, write, be entertained, converse, but it is an instrument -- but not the artist playing it. In most of us, it senses things around us, and we identify the notion of "self" with it. Yet it is the mind thinking on its own for the most part;

4) The Superconscious or Ubermind: This is the notion of you standing outside yourself as a detached but dedicated observer...watching what you do as if you were a third party. This is the mind that is representative of you watching yourself. It makes itself a part of the world around you looking at how you conduct yourself. This is the captain, or pilot of the other layers of mind. It is, in philosophical theory, the ultimate controller of all of the other levels, if you find it, focus upon it, and float free of your other layers. It is a part of you that can look at you from any angle and separate itself from you if you know how to will it to do so. This Superconscious looks down upon you as you live your life and interact with your environment.

Persons claiming experiences with astral projection, out of body experiences, and near-death experiences have reported experience this kind of detached observation. Much research was done on the whole out-of-body liberation experience by Robert A. Monroe, the fellow who they named the Monroe Institute after. These types of detachment sensations have also been induced externally by deploying such catalysts as various psychedelic and hallucinogenic drugs, such as LSD, DMT, peyote buttons and other phytochemicals, mostly tryptamines.

5) Then there may be the collective consciousness that many sociologists and psychologists use to explain phenomena such as spontaneous and simultaneous breakthroughs, instant revelations, clairvoyance and many other things which the proponents of the paranormal , Rosicrucians, and other groups reference in their writings and doctrines.

Getting back to the theme of "Being Yourself," we Braintenancers see the oddest paradox -- in order to know who you are and who you should be, would mean that you would have to detach your Superconscious objective mind from all of the other layers of mind in order to view yourself somewhat objectively... and wouldn't that require either losing the notion of the creature we were observing as being anything more than a reactive robot, or getting the notion that when we step outside of ourselves through meditative observational detachment, there is no longer any self at all.

Think about it. The more you think about this, and the more you focus on being an outside, detached observer of your own actions, the more brilliant, yet peaceful you will become. This is the perhaps the highest level of consciousness you can obtain -- and in the process, the identity of you as a being, fades away.

As any accomplished sufi.

See you soon.

Controlling Your Thoughts - The "Overmind" - Your Two Conscious Minds.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

You are of two conscious minds, metaphorically. One mind is the conscious performer, busily engaged in thinking and acting; the other (far less cultivated and not as well understood) is the detached mind. This is the mind that can stand outside of you and observe both your conscious thoughts and behavior. It is your MIND OVER MIND, or simply, the Overmind [a convenient Lingovation].

If you can develop this overmind, you can control any aspect of your conscious mind's thought programs and actions. You can control your thoughts and decide what you'd prefer to be thinking about and doing. This requires an exercising of the Overmind.

The best way to do this is by simply being mindful in the moment of what you are doing. Do not just think and act -- use your underexercised and underdeveloped Overmind to observe, as if an outside examiner, every sensation and action and thought of each moment. This deliberate mindfulness can be cultivated to the extent that the Overmind can eventually intervene and converse with the conscious performer (the "regular" conscious mind) in order to change its thought patterns (i.e., its conditioned programming, usually in the form of a less-than-satisfactory stimulus-response loop which needs to be broken but which has become neurologically etched and ingrained due to countless repetitions of the same pattern).

When your Overmind has become so detached from the rest of your conscious thoughts and actions that it is really the external representative of your intelligent will (instead of a creature of impulse, going around in circles), you will have achieved a state of incredibly powerful control... Control over your thought cycles, your actions, your impulsive reactions and all manner of non-productive behavior.

Try being mindful and getting the "feel" of your Overmind as it separates itself from your ordinary thoughts and actions and teaches itself to reprogram your thoughts and actions as if it were an objective, wise outsider.

The Braintenance Blog Prescription? Let your Overmind play each and every day.

Here are the answers to the "complete the sequence" exercises from last time. The answers are in red. The explanations are incomplete. You see, somewhere in the recesses of your mind, those patterns are quite visible -- as we work together, you will learn to access these patterns (i.e., pattern recognition) in order to complete these exercises with incredible ease.

2) Find the next number in each of the following sequences of numbers (key: learn the rule, and then extrapolate):

  • 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, __ 31 (prime number sequence)
  • 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, __81 (each number squared)
  • 1100, 1010, 1001, 0110, 1101 __ (there is no pattern -- the last number in the sequence simply did not belong; perhaps it should have been 0101....but you tried to justify it. Right?)
  • 0, 2, 2, 4, 6, 10, 16, 26, 42,__(68 - this is a variant on the Fibonacci Sequence)
  • 2, 20, 200, 2,000, 20,000 __ 200,000
  • 6, 24, 120, 720, 1,540, _____12,320 (think factorially! - 6 = 1x2x3; and 24 = 1x2x3x4; the pattern is simply factorial)

Your Perception Of Physics: ALTERED - Watch This Video

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Perception IS Reality - as we experience it.

The video which follows (which involves some forces applied to a simple, commonplace mixture of cornstarch and water) may alter your perception of physical reality as you've been conditioned to understand/expect it. I find it useful for several reasons:

1) It opens the mind to accept that it has been brainwashed or conditioned;

2) It creates and increased hunger for learning;

3) It forces us to question many of our own accepted truths, and has the added psychic/psychological bonus of making us detach from ourselves and our ordinary robotic thinking to instead stand outside of ourselves and view ourselves from a more objective, analytic perspective.

You'll enjoy this video tremendously. Just click on the link for instant transport.

Expand Your Mind - Paradoxes Of Faith

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Is there a God? And if there is, why is He making me ask this question?

There are some wonderful logical and paradoxical questions and sayings that have emerged through Humankind’s quest for a definitive answer to the troublesome problem of proof about the existence of God. Each of them gives one some pause for thought, and all of them are mind strengtheners. Here they come:

1. “My belief in God is based on faith. With absolute faith, a person can know, with complete certainty, that which cannot be proven. Faith is a God-given blessing.”

2. “If God created the universe, and if every effect is preceded by some cause, who or what created God?”

3. In one of my most doubtful moments, following a great tragedy in my life, I told my college roommate that I had lost my belief in God. My roommate replied, putting his hand gently on my shoulder, “Just because you don’t believe in God doesn’t mean that he doesn’t believe in you, and care about you and love you.” I remember these words being a great source of comfort at that time.

4. An old quote from an episode of the breakthrough television sitcom “All In The Family,” uttered by Archie Bunker's self-righteous son-in-law, Michael: “Arch, when I think of all the things that have been done in the name of religion, it makes me thank God that I’m an atheist!” Hysterical, hmmm?

5. If you look up at the sky with clenched fists and yell (either out loud, or in your mind’s voice), “If you exist, God, how could you have let this [tragedy] happen? I don’t believe in you!” – It means that you are, in fact, a believer, but with some serious questions about His reasons and actions. The premise of a dialogue (as opposed to a monologue or a soliloquy), is that a second party is listening – but that second party may or may not respond. The difference between a dialogue and a monologue is that in a dialogue, the second party may not only listening, but that the presumed listening second party may in fact, respond.

Faithfully,

I Will Teach You Nothing - You Will Learn Much From Me

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Portrait of René Descartes, dubbed the "F...Image via Wikipedia - Rene Descartes: philosopher, mathematician, theoretical physicist, and a fellow with an unkempt but nonetheless fascinating hairstyle.

Most individuals don't actually understand the distinction between teaching (a third-person exercise) and learning (a first-person exercise).

When a wise philosopher [most philosophers are assumed to be wise -- this is principally out of respect, I believe, for any person with the wondrous ability to a) survive without actually having to either earn a living by some sort of work, or b) with the good fortune to be leisurely whittling away at a substantial familial inheritance while pontificating about whatever happens to be on his or her mind] said to one of his disciples (every successful philosopher worth his weight in either hemlock or horse manure must have disciples):

"I will teach you nothing. And you will learn much from me," he was not even stating a clever paradox. There actually is no puzzle or riddle embedded in this preliminarily conflictory-seeming statement. If you don't quite understand why, re-read the first sentence of this post.
If that doesn't satisfy, read on:

We learn by teaching ourselves. No one truly teaches us. We learn by voluntary applying our senses and ability to reason to teaching ourselves. This is what is meant when someone (usually a meddlesome, conceited, self-proclaimed "adult") says,"You can best teach by example," or "children don't learn by what we preach to them; they learn by observing what we actually do."

A teacher is a catalyst, or a source of information, or an inspiration. But we learn by teaching ourselves.
