Seven Fabulous Memory Hacks - Braintenance - Douglas E. Castle

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

The following fabulous memory hacks (I'm using the term "hacks" in the non-pejorative sense of the term) were recently described in an article by Bruce Price in the Blog “Mental_Floss” which I happened to stumble upon while casually surfing about the labyrinth of, well, StumbleUpon. While the original article listed “10 Mnemonic Tricks,” I found the first 7 of them to be worth sharing; the other three (probably added in the interest of making an even 10), where either impractical or (pun intended) unmemorable.

Use these as part of your memorization mastery regimen for better Braintenance, my dear Cranial Campers. But be advised that they are not substitutes for true native memory development – they are merely shortcuts where our underdeveloped memories would otherwise fail us. Those few of us blessed with eidetic or photographic memories may simply skim over this article rapidly.

1. The rhyme.

For hundreds of years, schoolchildren started the study of American history with: "In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue."

2. The verbal gimmick.

Clearly, modern civilization would be impossible without these four words: "Spring forward. Fall back."

3. The poem.

Probably a million people every day resort to this famous six-liner:
Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November;
All the rest have thirty-one
Excepting February alone:
Which hath but twenty-eight, we find,
Till leap year gives it twenty-nine.

4. The easy association.

Many people have trouble with these similar words —desert, dessert — until they remember that when it comes to tasty treats like cake and ice cream, you always want an extra helping — just as the word itself has an extra s.

5. The contrived association.

The essential trick is to focus on something odd or funny, and use that to jog your memory. All the memory experts are doing this when they rattle off the names of many people: Bob is big and bald; Charlie has a chin as big as China. And so on.

These two words are killers: stalactite, stalagmite. But stalag means prison; and mite suggests mighty. Clearly, a fortress solidly on the ground. So the other thing has to be hanging from the ceiling.

6. The acronym.

Suppose you have to buy three things: nails, plywood, and antifreeze. Use the initial letter of each item to create a word: PAN. Remember that. In the store, work in reverse, P-A-N, the letters reminding you what you have to buy.

HOMES is a famous example. It tells us our Great Lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.

Almost as famous is Roy G. Biv, a phony name which tells the colors of the rainbow or spectrum (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet).

7. Cross words.

Acrostics are another thing entirely. You don't create a new word, you create a memorable phrase or sentence. The first letter of each word stands for the things you're trying to remember. In smart schools, middle-schoolers are given the task of inventing mnemonics for the 8 planets:  My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nachos (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus. Neptune).

The eight little bones in the wrist are a big task for anyone: Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetral, Pisiform, Trapezium, Trapezoid, Capitate, Hamate. The job is easier, or at least funnier, with this: Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can't Handle.

Med school is next to impossible without mnemonics. One of the most famous reveals the names of the nerves that come directly through the skull (not the spinal column): On Old Olympus' Towering Top, A Finn And German Vaulted And Hopped. (Olfactory, Optic, Oculomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Auditory, Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory/Spinal, Hypoglossal.)

=> Well, ladies and gentlemen of the Limitless Mind Society, there you have them. Seven terrific memory hacks to supplement your memory development Braintenance exercises in those cases where rote memory is all that is required and where our internal arsenals have a bunch of IOUs where the best tools should be.

Thank you, as always for reading me.

Build Your Brainpower By Confusion -- Douglas E. Castle - Braintenance

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

 ?

In Braintenance, confusion is the magic which creates new neurological pathways, greater plasticity, and enhanced creative skills. The brain and mind are strengthened in the same fashion as the bodybuilder builds and defines new muscle -- by changing the workout regimen to "shock" the body into over-compensation. The mental exercises which follow are gearing toward forcing you to think (and problem-solve) in a different manner than you usually do by changing the entire problem-solving scenario.

Want to strengthen your mind? of course you do. Simply find the missing numbers or letters in each of the following sequences. You'll notice that you are not trying to find the next number or letter in each sequence (as you are accustomed to doing) -- you are being asked to think interpolatively instead of extrapolatively:

1)   A C _ D C E D _ E G

2)   _ 4 9 _ 25 _ 49

3)   2 4 _ _ 10 _ 14

4)   P_S_ENG_RS  O_  A  T_AIN

5)   _ 3 _ 7 _ 13 17 19 23 _ 31

Thank you, as always, for reading me.

Pattern Recognition Versus Memorization: Braintenance

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Two essential components of intelligence are the ability to recognize (and extrapolate) patterns, and the ability to simply memorize strings of randomized data. Each requires the use of different parts of the brain. Alternating between one and the other creates an increase in both abilities plus increases neuronal plasticity and problem-solving ability.

For each of the following strings of data, do the following:

1) Recite all of the data points from memory after looking at the data for no longer than two minutes;
2) Recite all of the data points backwards from memory after looking at the data for another minute;
3) If you recognize a pattern, find the next data point.

NOTE: Do not look back to previous strings in working on this exercise!
---------------

STRING A: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 ...

STRING B: 1, 3, 2, 4, 3, 5, 4, 6, 5, 7 ...

STRING C: 3, 7, 5, 8, 3, 9, 6, 11, 2 ...

STRING D: Apple, Bicycle, Carnival, Donut, Energy, Footprint ...

STRING E: Carbon, Log, Melon, River, Wheel, Toe ...

STRING F: Apple, Log, Carnival, River, Donut, Wheel, Energy ...

STRING G: Apple, 2, Bicycle, 4, Carnival, 6, Donut ...

Now that you've done this exercise, relax for a minute or so, and enjoy the embedded video below:

Better Vocabulary = More Powerful Intellect

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

We tend to think in pictures, but we describe those images in words. The better our vocabularies, the better our ability to express what we are picturing, and the more persuasive that we can be. But were you aware that by increasing your vocabulary, you also increase you mind's ability to visualize, conceptualize and think coherently?

That is correct. The better and more extensive your vocabulary, the more creative your imagination and the sharper your intellect!

My suggestion for taking command of a newly-learned vocabulary word is entailed in the following simple steps:

1) Learn the word (at least one new one per day), and use it in several sentences uttered to yourself
, even if this feels a bit unnatural, or forced at first;

2) Close your eyes, and write the word ten times on the blackboard of your mind;

3) Use the word at least three times the next day in conversations with others.

For today, you might just look up the true meanings of the often confused and abused terms "notoriety," "noteworthy," "stealth," "lucrative" and "opulent."

Remember, more vocabulary, better mental pictures, better neural plasticity, less propensity toward dementia and, of course, higher Scrabble scores.

Knowledge Can Make You Rich

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Knowledge Can Make You Rich
But Only If You Are Intelligent Enough To Apply It;
And Even Then, Only If You Are Motivated To Use Your Intelligence.

But you must first understand and acknowledge what knowledge actually is. According to Wikipedia:

“Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness or understanding of someone or something, such as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is acquired through experience or education by perceiving, discovering, or learning. Knowledge can refer to a theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. It can be implicit (as with practical skill or expertise) or explicit (as with the theoretical understanding of a subject); it can be more or less formal or systematic.[1] In philosophy, the study of knowledge is called epistemology; the philosopher Plato famously defined knowledge as "justified true belief", though "well-justified true belief" is more complete as it accounts for the Gettier problems. However, several definitions of knowledge and theories to explain it exist.
Knowledge acquisition involves complex cognitive processes: perception, communication, and reasoning; while knowledge is also said to be related to the capacity of acknowledgment in human beings.[2]”
Intelligence (as this term is used in describing intellectual processes and processing, and as it is distinctly differentiated from “knowledge”), while its precise definition is the subject of much spirited debate, has to do with the ability to utilize knowledge to solve a problem or achieve an objective. If your intelligence is not utilized, it may well be the most costly mistake of your life. If it [intelligence] is applied to an increasing body of acquired knowledge, you can truly become as rich or as successful as you please.

Motivation is the drive to use this ability called “intelligence” in order to solve a problem, or in order to achieve an objective.

To put the whole picture together in the form of a rudimentary equation:

KNOWLEDGE + INTELLIGENCE + MOTIVATION = SUCCESS

Take a quick break from following the U.S. Mid-Term Elections (this post is dated November 2nd 2014) and please have a look at these free to subscribe e-newspapers, edited by Douglas E. Castle. We've scraped the web for the best news and commentary from the most reliable and authoritative sources available (wire services, newspapers, magazines, scholarly works, blogs and social media), and compiled it for you to either skim rapidly or to read in detail at your leisure. Be the smartest, best-informed person in any room or in attendance at any meeting [then again, don't act overly cocky or you're liable to incur the wrath of your colleagues, business associates and friends – Remember: nobody likes a smart***]. Average is typical. Intelligent and informed are exceptional. Which would you prefer to be? Do you resent rhetorical questions? Anyway, the underlined words and titles are hyperlinked for your clicking pleasure:

Need I say more? While this looks like brazen, shameless self-promotion [and I'm not saying that it isn't], the information in this e-newspaper relates to various crucial aspects of entrepreneurial projects as well as small- to medium-sized businesses. The information varies from day to day, but it covers the fields of finance, management, marketing, accounting, regulation, best practices, technology and trends, in both the B2B and B2C environments. But then I've already said too much...

=> A new issue of The Undercurrent =>|<= is out!
Great news, commentary and trend reports about industrial intelligence, executive protection, data security, workplace safety and a host of other intriguing things happening behind the scenes in business.

=> A new issue of World Disruption And Commentary is out!
This is possibly the country's best compilation of news, commentary and trends [possibly a slight exaggeration] about industry, product and technological disruption and disruptors, covering new births as well as extinctions, both at present [in real-time] and as projected. Disruption and displacement will be the death knell for some products, companies, industries and investments, but will present profitable arbitrage opportunities for those who are in the know and act on these insights.

Difficult Personality Types: Confusing Terminology

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

There are many individuals who possess certain self-defining characteristics which we try to label them with. And all too often, we mislabel them -- and almost as often, they mislabel themselves! Let's think about this and try to find out what the characteristics are which define a person. Let's stop mis-classifying (either a Lingovation or a word assembled out of convenience) our fellow Humans. After all, we are the readers and followers of The Braintenance Blog - and we are each and all compelled by a quest to become more intelligent and more knowledgeable (by the way, do you fully understand the difference between intelligent and knowledgeable?) in the interests of the mind's own desire for growth.

1) Many times the words "cynic" and "skeptic" are used interchangeably. Yet each describes a very different kind of person. What are the crucial differences between a cynic and a skeptic?

Hint:
One is an obsessive questioner, and a challenger of the status quo, but without making a judgment, per se. The other starts with the fundamental premise, the assumption (if you will) that things are all for the worst, and that the basic nature of Humankind is quite evil and self-serving. He finds an underlying agenda or motivation of selfishness and sinfulness behind every Human act.

2) What is the key difference between an agnostic and an atheist?

Hint:
One has drawn a conclusion, and the other believes that he does not have the ability to draw a definitive conclusion, so he cannot be either a believer in God, per se, or a disbeliever... he has no proof either way. He is confessing ignorance, and the inability to take a stand either way in the absence of proof which meets his "normal standard."

3) What are the characteristics of a misanthrope?

4) What are the defining differences between a sociopath and a psychopath?

5) What are the differences between an intention and an action? Are they merely the consequences associated with one and not the other?

Categorizing, stereotyping and pigeonholing persons can be a very difficult and dangerous business. Years ago, one of the most stunningly brilliant individuals it was ever my privilege to know was almost thrown out of public school because of his inability to learn conventionally -- he was called ineducable and even 'possibly retarded.' Later, we found out that Robert was severely dyslexic [perhaps lysdexic would be a more appropriate term] and that he had to learn (or mentally process) things in a different way than that which was conventional.

The worst part of the label game is that it might induce a subconscious self-fulfilling prophesy. What if you were told that you were stupid, repeatedly? -- how do you think you would fare on your examinations, or at doing routine tasks?

Remember, my friends: "Words can heal, but they are also weapons if misused or abused."And misused implies ignorance, while abused implies evil intent.

Choose your words wisely, and use them just as wisely.

As always, thank you for reading me, and for sharing these articles with you colleagues, connections and contacts through the many social media platforms with the help of social media sharing tools -- and there are so many.

You Cannot Truly Win A Race Against Time - Thoughts And Quotes About Time.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Several observations -- and do not look at your watch because you will be wasting valuable, irreplaceable time by the act of tracking it!

Since you've been kind enough to stay with me for this length of time, I will attempt to add some "party conversation starting quotation" value to this post, with a quote from my closest associate, Mr. Douglas E. Castle:

"Prepare for the future, because the present moment becomes history all too quickly."

More Quotes follow, invoking paradoxes or infinitely self-recursive statements which provoke deeper and more expansive thought. The Human Mind, when challenged by a concept that warrants analysis (actually "validation" or acceptable analogy).

"You cannot make up for lost time. No matter how expediently and ambitiously you accelerate the pace of your work, the unproductive present moment is permanently gone, except for its persistence in memory."

"You cannot change the speed of the passage of time -- but you can augment your perceptions, experiences and growth while it takes you on its course."

"Re-living the past, as it occurred, is merely an exercise in either self-flagellation or daydreaming. However, re-constructing various alternate versions of what you might have done alternatively is an exercise in preparing for the future, and a part of internal review essential to the learning process."

That is all for now. Except for this seeming clunker, which is actually a concentrated nugget of wisdom...

"By the time you have recited 'The Future Is Now' you will have witnessed its true essence."
