Brainstorming - A Very Useful Tool If Used Properly -

BRAINTENANCE  (http://braintenance.blogspot.com/)

Dear Readers:

Brainstorming is a process where a group of persons get together and develop fresh ideas and approaches to creative problem-solving by using a combination of processes:

1. Free Association - Where a person's word or an idea sparks another word or idea.

2. Free Group Interaction - Where a word or an idea from one person sparks a word or idea in another.

3. Construction - Where the first two processes lead to the spontaneous construction of a method or mechanism that did not exist (or could not have been readily seen) before. Usually an exciting idea which emerges out of the first two processes has sufficient gravity and fascination so as to create a foundation upon which the collaborative group builds something, with each member contributing some material, or some refinement of material.

Brainstorming is an integral component of the Mastermind Effect, and has the added bonuses of producing increased trust and cameraderie, greater spontaneity of communications, and enhanced creativity on the part of the group and on the part of every member.
---------------

Here are some very important guidelines for the Brainstorming Process, contributed by http://www.creativethinkingwith.com/. Please review them, take them seriously, and begin to integrate the creative, social and inspirational process of hosting regular brainstorming sessions. The Human Mind needs a vacation from hyper-discipline and prolonged focus in order to keep its most creative potentials from atrophying:

Creative Thinking
With Brainstorming

New ways to use Brainstorming, the classic creative thinking technique

Brainstorming remains one of the most effective creative thinking techniques in use today. With it's policy of non-judgement and rapid fire spitting out of ideas that spark off one another, it's a real firecracker way to generate quality new insights, breakthroughs and innovations. Invented within the advertising industry by Alex Osborn way back in the early 1940's, brainstorming has enjoyed over 60 years of continuous use, refinement and development.

Nowadays you are as likely to sit down with brainstorming software as within the traditional group setting of between 6 and 12 people. That said, companies across the world still use formalised group brainstorming as part of their R&D, marketing, and right across the board of their departments to try and push the envelope in a kaizen quest for improvement and more profits.

Whether you choose to practice brainstorming alone (with a pad and pen, or using your PC brainstorming software), with a partner, or in the traditional setting of a group of 6-12, there are certain guidelines you'll want to follow to maximise your creative thinking experience.

The primary thought to sustain when you brainstorm is: NO JUDGEMENT!

You accept that for the period of your brainstorm session, you will set aside the internal editor, your logical rational mind. You leave the Judge and Jury at the door, and accept that a lot of your ideas may fall within the realms of the impossible, the ludicrous and the banal. That's okay... ideas come in a heirarchy of usefulness and they travel in packs or families. And just like any family, some of ideas within the family will be annoying, others stupid and yet there may be family member supported within the group that shines out.

The mind works in mysterious ways and one of its greatest mysteries is how an excellent idea can be supported, sustained by or built from really awful ideas. So, remember, during a brainstorming session, judge nothing and accept all ideas as having a right to exist and a potential usefulness.

All Brainstorming Begins With A Creative Challenge

A fire is started with a spark. Your 'spark' to unleash a brainstorming inferno is your set-up, the creative challenge you lay before yourself or the participants. Think of various different ways of structuring the description of your creative challenge. The mindset with which you approach a  problem will determine the direction that you set off in pursuit of an answer. By asking the question in a variety of different ways, you reframe the problem and affect the answers you get from brainstorming. By looking at the challenge from as many different perspectives as possible, you move the target scope cross-hairs across the landscape of your creativity. And you'll hit a lot more unique ideas.

Wisdom From Personal Experience - BRAINTENANCE

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

These might turn out to be two important thoughts to ponder. Then again, pondering is nice, but taking positive action and implementaing changes where they should be made is courageous and character-building. Here's some wisdom (born of personal experience, and great pain) for a Saturday:

"If you've never made any enemies, then you've never expressed your opinion, or taken any significant action." -- Douglas Castle

"If you haven't any friends, then you've never taken the time to ask how someone feels and listened to their reply." -- Douglas Castle

Perspective: One Person's Catastrophe Is Another's Opportunity - BRAINTENANCE

Perspective: One Person's Catastrophe Is Another's Opportunity - BRAINTENANCE

Dear Readers and Member's of Aunt Rose's Mah Jongg (sp?) Group in North Palm Beach, Florida:

As soon as the Internet became a medium for mass communication in regular use, over-aggressive marketers began sending spam to email addresses, social media sites, networking groups, blogs and everywhere they might be able to get their unauthorized and generally unwelcome messages to groups of people.

After a brief period of time, robots (automation programs for repetitive processes) came into use for the purpose of accelerating and broadening the spread of spam ("spam on steroids!").

In order to thward these literary litterers, the CAPTCHA code program was devised by some very good "white hat" programmers out of Princeton University (then again, it might have been Phoenix University, DeVry, Katherine Gibbs, or Ball State, but I don't think so -- I should use spelllcheck and a fact-checker, but I'm a) too cocky and b) too cheap) developed the CAPTCHA process to keep robots from spamming us.

The idea was to use a string of machine-distorted letters and numbers (which could theoretically be read only by Humans, and perhaps well-trained weasels) which had to be interpreted and reproduced in order to access a website or application. The idea was, in principle, a great one -- keep the robots out, and only let hard-working Human Beings (and the occasionally trained weasel) to gain access to sight if it could prove that it was not a robot by passing the CAPTCHA test code at the portal of entry.

This created a disaster for many of the marketers who had been become utterly dependent upon robots to spread their solicitations and other messages (categorically, "spam"). These people were being put out of business.

But the cries of spam-marketers were heard by some "black hat" geeks who saw that a new market (i.e., businesses that were dependent upon spam for their proliferation and profits) had opened up to them. These entrepreneurs have since created numerous programs to bypass and otherwise thwart the CAPTCHA code.

In fact if you google the term CAPTCHA you'll find some great information. If you then google the terms CAPTCHA code bypass you'll find a host of means of bypassing the CAPTCHA qualifier.

Given some time, there will be another generation of CAPTCHA-purposed programs which will defeat these CAPTCHA code bypass tools.

The pendulum swings, creating catastrophes and new markets with every stroke.

Solve a problem, and you've addressed the needs of a market.

Create a problem, and you've opened up another, new market.

Catastrophe and Opportunity are opposite sides of the same coin.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Re-Humanization - A Renewed Commitment to Each Other - The Hollies..."He Ain't Heavy - He's My Brother"

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Consider this post to be a slight change of pace. Sometimes a diversion is necessary. --DC

When I was a boy, this song would bring tears to my eyes. I did not fully comprehend the profound implications of the simple lyrics -- I didn't fully appreciate the metaphor. Yet I knew I was listening to a parayer, a lesson, a declaration of unconditional love, and I was moved to the core.

I'll bet this song by the Hollies ("He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother") opened a great many hearts, made people aware of the spiritual ties that bind us, and initiated a great number of charitable acts of kindness. The message is profound. It means that we are all part of a Human Family, and that we cannot harden ourselves against the cries of the suffering, abandon those who need us, or divorce ourselves from the essence of our Humanity.

This song, over the years, has come to define the greatest qualities of Humanity...if fact, perhaps the very definition of Humanity...to me. The further we move from its spirit, the harder and colder life becomes. The more selfish and unfulfilled we become. The more prone we are to being abusers and tolerators or abuse.

We need to Re-Humanize. Please take some quiet time to listen to this song and permit it to commandeer your weary conscience and take you to a world that could be, if we chose to make it so.

Songs, poetry, stories -- the are the highest part of our Humanity speaking through us, metaphorically, to keep our Humanity alive, and to re-awaken it when it has curled up into a frightened ball in a dark corner of our soul.

Listen and feel. Encourage others to do the same. Let us Re-Humanize.

Focus and Attention - Two Different Skills

Focus And Attention - Two Different Skills

Dear Brainstrainers:

Focus and Attention are two different skills which operate together to make us function (i.e., solve problems) at our best.

Focus is the ability to narrow the sensorial scope and concentrate it on a particular thing, without being distracted by another.

Attention is the temporal retention of focus, i.e., how long you can maintain your focus.

Both skills are important, and can use a bit of sharpening from time to time.

Lumosity has a wonderful exercise for strengthening both of these important abilities. The exercise is also a great deal of fun. Click on the link below to engage your mind in a wonderful exercise. Do you like irony? --- If you are stressed, the greatest way to depressurize, re-energize and re-invigorate yourself is through distraction/ diversion; and the best distraction/ diversion (of course), is a firm focus on some unrelated but entertaining and engaging task.

Oh...almost forgot...the link...

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

What Percentage Of Your Time Do You Spend Thinking About Money? - TNNWC MINI-SURVEY #9

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Cousin Ruprecht always says: "I like surveys. They're fun." Sadly, he is still institutionalized, despite a notable improvement in his table manners and exceptionally high marks regarding his personal sanitation habits. (sigh). But I digress...

TNNWC MINI-SURVEY #9 OPENS!

$$$...?

TNNWC MINI-SURVEY #9: Thinking About Money...
The survey question is a very simple one but has implications which dramatically affect every single one of us, and the quality of our lives:

Give it some serious thought before you select one answer from the choices below. Include any of those times when you may be consumed with worries about college tuition, refinancing your home mortgage, outliving your retirement funds, and the like -- in other words, any time that you are distracted by thoughts of your financial obligations.

The polls for this survey will close at midnight, Eastern Time, on November 20th, 2010.

To access the survey, click on:

The results will be posted EVERYWHERE!

Taking A Leak - The #1 Trickle-Down Tactical Marketing Tool

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

"Can you believe they really did THAT ?!"
Taking A Leak – a/k/a “Trickle Down Tactical Marketing”

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Readers:

What follows is a mere sample, but a good one -

Sneak Peek From Security Leak: "Tastlessness Sells!" TNNWC Update Bulletin: 10.11.10 Dare you not to laugh. http://bit.ly/newsleak  #TNNWC

People just love leaks. Why (you ask)? Because 1) they feel that they are getting fast-track, important news that was intended to be kept secret; 2) they like to see something that others haven’t been privy [not intended to be a pun] to; and, 3) There is the assumption that secrets are always important, and good to know.

Leaks are generally perceived as being more reliable as news sources than official announcements and mainstream media.

My advice: Organize a Leakage Campaign to keep your prospective market’s eager ear to your door. Leaks are a powerful appetite stimulant for further information and the outward expansion of your brand’s “buzz field.”

Speaking in very plain terms: In my book of buzz-to-brand™ marketing, a properly taken leak is truly the #1 strategy in building a buzz and in generating excitement and anticipation.

Faithfully,
